The mission of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesia is to deliver exceptional clinical care while fostering high-quality training and encouraging an environment of inquiry and discovery within pediatric medicine. This commitment constructs a robust foundation aimed at advancing the field of pediatric anesthesiology through the cultivation of future leaders and enhancement of patient outcomes concerning surgical and non-surgical procedures across diverse pediatric demographics. The division is staffed with a dedicated full-time, board-certified faculty, representing the only pediatric anesthesia specialization within the New York metropolitan area, catering to a wide age range from neonates to young adults 1.
Facilities and Services
The Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive facilities including ten operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms, and three diagnostic and interventional imaging rooms. The Division of Pediatric Anesthesia addresses a spectrum of pediatric surgical specialties such as pediatric general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, urology, cardiac surgery, and solid organ transplantation. Notably, the cardiac surgical program stands out as the most significant in New York, acting as a major referral center for children with congenital heart defects. Furthermore, the solid organ transplant program ranks among the busiest nationwide for pediatric liver transplants 1.
Pain Management Program
The division also emphasizes a dedicated pediatric pain management program, employing a multimodal strategy aimed at managing acute perioperative pain as well as chronic pain conditions resulting from complex surgical and medical challenges. This innovative approach ensures that pediatric patients receive comprehensive pain management tailored to their unique needs 1.
Educational Opportunities
Educational initiatives within the division encompass comprehensive clinical training in pediatric anesthesia offered at both resident and fellow levels. The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship provides an extensive one-year advanced fellowship program accredited by relevant authorities, which typically accommodates seven participants annually. Moreover, the Department of Anesthesiology has introduced an endowed lecture series focusing on Pediatric Anesthesiology, fostering further inquiry into this essential field 1.
Research Initiatives
Research plays a vital role within the division, with ongoing programs spanning both basic and clinical research aimed at enhancing patient care. A key highlight is CUMC acting as the coordinating site for the multisite Pediatric Anesthesia and NeuroDevelopment Assessment (PANDA) study, recently concluding with findings published in prestigious medical literature. This study significantly contributed to understanding the neurodevelopmental outcomes of otherwise healthy children following a single exposure to general anesthesia during early childhood 1.
Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship program positions itself as highly competitive, attracting candidates with diverse backgrounds. Previous experience and academic performance, including board scores, play critical roles in the selection process. The program is known for being friendly towards both DO and IMG candidates, enhancing the diversity of its fellows. Specific application requirements typically include graduation year parameters and allowances for exam failures that meet set thresholds, ensuring a broad pool of qualified applicants. Moreover, the program provides visa sponsorship for international medical graduates, facilitating their participation in this advanced fellowship training.
