STEP 209

The Charleston Area Medical Center/Greenbrier Valley Medical Center Family Medicine Residency program aims to train future family medicine physicians to provide exceptional quality and compassionate care to the diverse population of southern West Virginia. With a team of 12 dedicated residents focused on Rural Medicine and Community outreach, the program offers rotations at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Robert C. Byrd Clinic, and The VA Medical Center.

While in the process of gaining Osteopathic Recognition, the program has historically provided a strong Osteopathic Curriculum for both Osteopathic and Allopathic residents through combined didactics and ONMM rotations. Located in a rural setting, residents have the opportunity to practice full-scope family medicine for inpatient, outpatient, Wilderness Medicine, and CAMC Inpatient Pediatrics. They are involved in hands-on procedures during inpatient rotations, such as Central lines, intubations, knee injections, and more.

Graduates of the program have achieved a 100% Board Certification and pursued various career paths, ranging from outpatient clinicians to Inpatient Hospitalists, Nocturnists, Fellows in Geriatric and Emergency Medicine, Program Directors, and Chiefs of Staff. Following the hospital's acquisition by Charleston Area Medical Center in 2023, residents have benefited from increased support and opportunities.

Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, with a rich history dating back to 1907, plays an essential role in providing quality patient care and exceptional service to the residents of southeastern West Virginia and beyond. As an ACGME accredited Postdoctoral Training Institution, the program aims to enhance the integrity of the osteopathic profession, provide quality education and training, promote innovation in medical education, and support the development of well-trained physicians for under-served and rural areas.

Residents have the opportunity to rotate and participate in continuity clinics at Robert C. Byrd Clinic and the Beckley VA Medical Center, where they gain exposure to various specialties. The program focuses on training primary care physicians committed to providing holistic healthcare and improving patient care in rural communities.
