Curriculum Overview

The residency curriculum is structured to provide a solid foundation in both clinical and surgical aspects of otolaryngology. Residents participate in daily one-on-one mentoring sessions in clinics and operating rooms. The program also hosts several academic conferences and training sessions, including:

• Twice monthly audiology and otology conferences with otologists and audiologists.
• Wednesday morning academic conferences, which include grand rounds and facial trauma rounds.
• A multidisciplinary head and neck tumor board that involves collaboration across numerous specialties.
• Structured temporal bone dissection and anatomy training conducted at least twice yearly.
• Monthly journal clubs focusing on current literature in various otolaryngologic subspecialties.

PGY-1 residents complete a diverse set of surgical rotations including pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, and anesthesia, among others. From PGY-2 onwards, residents split their rotations between head and neck surgery and pediatric otolaryngology, ensuring well-rounded exposure to all facets of the specialty. The last four years predominantly focus on otolaryngology.

Research Opportunities

Research is highly encouraged in the Otolaryngology residency program, with dedicated time allocated for developing research skills. Residents complete two dedicated research months in both PGY-3 and PGY-4 years. This research involvement allows residents to engage in basic science as well as prospective clinical studies, along with opportunities to publish case reports.

Training Environment

The Geisinger Health System comprises ten hospital campuses and receives a substantial number of new patients annually. The department performs over 3,500 surgical cases and handles more than 30,000 audiology procedures every year, offering residents exposure to high patient volumes and complex cases. Training includes backup call rotations designed to ensure comprehensive learning opportunities while maintaining resident wellness.

Geisinger’s Otolaryngology Residency Program offers visa sponsorship for eligible applicants. The program typically supports J-1 and H-1B visa types, making it accessible not only to U.S. graduates but also to international medical graduates (IMGs). Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The residency is considered highly competitive, particularly for U.S. allopathic graduates, but it also strives to be DO and IMG friendly. Applicants should keep in mind that specific application requirements may include a maximum number of failed STEP exams, and certain principles in academic performance may be used when evaluating candidates.

The program accepts applications exclusively through ERAS, which streamlines the application process for the candidates.
