Geisinger Health System Program

The Child Neurology Residency Program at Geisinger Health System provides a transformative and enriching environment for medical professionals interested in pursuing a career in pediatric neurology. Located at the Geisinger Janet Weis Children's Hospital, this program offers a comprehensive and high-quality educational experience. Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide residents with extensive clinical training. The block schedule includes rotations in Adult Neurology Outpatient Clinic, Adult Neurology Inpatient Rotation, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Psychology, and various electives. Electives cover a wide range of specialized areas including Neurophysiology (EEG and EMG), Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Neuroimmunology, Neurosurgery, and Genetics among others.

In the PGY3 year, residents undertake Adult Neurology Outpatient for three blocks, along with Adult Neurology Electives for two blocks and Adult Service Inpatient for six blocks. The PGY4 year includes seven blocks of Pediatric Neurology and two blocks of Pediatric Psychology, while PGY5 focuses six blocks on Pediatric Neurology along with electives.

Didactics

The program emphasizes hands-on learning where residents actively engage in didactic sessions. Discussing clinical cases among upper-level residents fosters a collaborative learning atmosphere. Furthermore, morning report sessions allow residents to review and discuss admissions, enhancing clinical decision-making skills.

Educational Opportunities

Residents have access to an array of educational activities including Neurology Grand Rounds, Topics in Pediatric Neurosciences series, Pediatric Epilepsy Conference, and Journal Club. These opportunities are vital in encouraging continuous learning and involvement in cutting-edge pediatric neurology.

Foundations of Neuroscience

A dedicated three-week course, Foundations of Neuroscience, provides in-depth knowledge in neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology, and neurophysiology. This course, attended by PGY3 and PGY5 residents, focuses on clinical syndromes and neuroimaging correlation, further developing the residents' understanding of complex neurological conditions.

Personal and Professional Development

The residency program places great importance on the wellness of its residents, providing resources to support mental health and work-life balance. Residents are encouraged to engage in advocacy and community outreach, with opportunities to volunteer and participate in legislative days in partnership with organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Application Process

The program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). It participates in the National Resident Matching Program and does not accept paper or emailed applications. Interviews are conducted virtually, adhering to current requirements and recommendations from national medical organizations.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The residency program offers visa sponsorship for international medical graduates, specifically J-1 visas. The program is known for being competitive, welcoming both DO and IMG candidates. Specific application requirements may include a recent graduation date and limitations on the number of failed STEP exams, although exact policies may vary each application cycle.
