The Internal Medicine Residency Program at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood is a three-year ACGME accredited program designed to train physicians in the specialty of internal medicine. Established in 2019, the program has grown rapidly, graduating its first cohort of 20 residents in June 2022. The program's vision includes the development of fellowship opportunities and advanced degrees in collaboration with the University of Houston, emphasizing a commitment to excellence in clinical care and research pathways of distinction.

1

The program admits 25 residents annually, structured in a 4+1 format where residents spend four weeks on clinical rotations followed by a dedicated week in their continuity clinic. This organized approach aims to cultivate well-rounded internists prepared for independent practice or further fellowship training. The focus on teamwork, collaboration, and a diverse educational environment fosters optimal learning and patient outcomes.

1

Clinical Rotations

Residents engage in varied outpatient and inpatient experiences. Outpatient trainings occur at the Kingwood Internal Medicine Specialists clinic, a modern facility that comprises 18 exam rooms and serves diverse patient populations. Residents manage a comprehensive range of conditions, simultaneously gaining expertise in ambulatory medicine, rheumatology, endocrinology, and women’s health.

1

Inpatient rotations are conducted primarily at HCA Healthcare Houston Kingwood, a full-service acute care hospital with 485 beds and a highly experienced medical staff. This hospital, servicing the northeast Houston area since over 25 years, provides residents with hands-on patient care experience in a supportive environment.

1

Diversity and Inclusivity

The residency program emphasizes diversity, actively recruiting applicants from various backgrounds, including a mix of MDs and DOs, US and international medical graduates, as well as equal representation of genders and underrepresented minorities. This commitment not only enhances the learning environment but also prepares residents to address diverse patient needs effectively.

1

Salary and Benefits

The residency offers competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, as well as an Employee Assistance Program. Residents enjoy a retirement plan with an employer-matched 401k, equipment such as iPhones and laptops, annual stipends for meals and orientation, and generous time off policies including 20 days of paid time off, 6 weeks of one-time paid family leave, and educational leave for conferences.

1

Application Requirements and Competitiveness

Applicants are evaluated holistically, with no minimum score requirements on the USMLE Step 1 or Step 2 CK. Instead, the program takes an individualized approach to the assessment of each candidate. However, applicants must have completed both examinations prior to interviews. Importantly, the program does not require US clinical experience as a prerequisite, although many applicants have participated in US-based rotations.

1

The program aims to be inclusive of graduates from osteopathic schools, recognizing COMLEX scores as equivalent to USMLE scores for evaluation purposes. The program does not accept J-1 visa sponsorship at this time; however, it sponsors H-1B visa applicants for international medical graduates.

1

Preference is given to candidates who graduated within three years of application, although there is flexibility regarding graduation dates. A total of three recommendation letters is required without any specific formatting guidelines, ensuring potential candidates can present their experiences in manners aligned with their qualifications.

1

Further Learning Opportunities

The residency program offers ongoing educational experiences, including access to a board review course and coverage for licensure examination costs. Residents are encouraged to engage in research opportunities and participate in educational conferences, further enhancing their expertise and practical knowledge in internal medicine.
