Program Overview

The Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship at Houston Methodist offers a comprehensive training experience for physicians who have completed pathology or medical genetics specialty training. This fellowship is structured for those interested in advancing their careers in molecular genetic pathology and associated research endeavors. The fellowship is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and accepts one fellow each year under the directorship of a qualified professional.

Houston Methodist is notably affiliated with prominent institutions such as Weill Cornell Medical College and Texas A&M Medical College, showcasing its dedication to providing an exceptional educational environment. The program benefits from a large pool of capable faculty, boasting a total of eleven faculty members, which includes clinical pathologists and board-certified medical geneticists, known for their contributions to the field.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is designed to provide fellows with exposure to a variety of clinical and laboratory experiences, reflecting state-of-the-art practices in molecular diagnostics. Trainees will gain practical experience in a high-volume laboratory that processes over 40,000 molecular assays annually, focusing on specialties such as infectious disease, genetics, and oncology.

Fellows will participate in rotations in significant partner institutions within the Texas Medical Center, including The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Baylor College of Medicine. These rotations contribute to a rich, multidisciplinary educational environment, emphasizing genetics counseling and specialties in molecular oncology.

Research Opportunities

Research is integral to the fellowship experience. Candidates have access to various translational research opportunities at the Houston Methodist Hospital Research Institute. In the early phase of the fellowship, fellows are expected to identify their area of research interest and may complete one or more clinical research projects throughout the training period.

The program emphasizes emerging fields in pathology, such as bioinformatics and molecular imaging, fostering a comprehensive approach to contemporary medical challenges.

Training and Professional Development

The fellowship includes essential training components, such as laboratory management, information systems, and quality assurance methods, ensuring fellows develop a well-rounded skill set. Competitive Application Process

The fellowship program maintains a competitive application process. Candidates are expected to be board-certified or board-eligible in either Clinical Pathology, Anatomic/Clinical Pathology, or Medical Genetics. It is necessary for applicants to either hold a full Texas physician license or be eligible for a Texas Physician-In-Training Permit.

Furthermore, interested candidates must submit their applications by December 31 in the year preceding the intended fellowship start date, which occurs on July 1.
