The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Jersey Shore University Medical Center offers a comprehensive three-year training program designed to equip fellows with the necessary clinical skills and knowledge to excel as cardiologists. Program Structure and Rotations

The fellowship program employs a 4-week block structure, encompassing 13 blocks per year—12 blocks for clinical work and one block for vacation. Rotations include critical components such as the Cardiac Care Unit, Consults Service, Catheterization Laboratory, Echocardiography, Electrophysiology Service, Heart Failure Service, and Vascular Medicine. Additionally, there are opportunities for research electives, allowing fellows to engage in academic pursuits.

Didactic Education

A robust educational framework supports the fellowship experience, featuring journal clubs, echo conferences, cath conferences, and various teaching sessions aimed at reinforcing cardiology principles. The program includes approximately 22 didactic sessions each month, half of which are presented by fellows under the guidance of faculty, fostering an environment of peer learning and collaboration.

Unique Aspects of the Program

Fellows are integral to the high-volume procedure environment at Jersey Shore, with the institution performing numerous advanced cardiac interventions annually, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacements and percutaneous coronary interventions. This extensive clinical exposure enhances the fellows' learning experience by allowing them to take part in approximately 1,000 open-heart surgeries and 4,500 catheterizations each year.

Application Requirements and Competitiveness

The application process is competitive, with candidates required to submit a USMLE score of at least 220 on both Steps I and II, or a COMLEX score of 500 and above. Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation, with a strong recommendation from the program director encouraged, as well as a personal statement and MSPE. The program welcomes diverse applicants regardless of age, gender, race, or other factors, promoting inclusivity in its selection process.

Salary and Benefits

Fellowship compensation includes a PGY4 salary of approximately $84,088, a PGY5 salary of $86,320, and a PGY6 salary of $88,539, with each fellow receiving four weeks of vacation annually.
