MaineHealth Program

The Addiction Medicine Fellowship at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC) is a comprehensive ACGME-accredited program designed to train physicians who aspire to become leaders in the field of addiction medicine. This multidisciplinary fellowship offers a broad curriculum that spans across various specialties and practice settings, equipping fellows with essential skills for addressing complex addiction issues in diverse populations.

Curriculum

The curriculum delivers education through both didactic and hands-on instruction, with a focus on clinical rotations. Fellows participate in a variety of clinical settings including:

• Comprehensive Addiction Medicine (CAM) – Portland
• Psychiatry Consult & Liaison Service – MaineHealth Maine Medical Center
• Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) – Maine Behavioral Healthcare, South Portland
• VA Togus Inpatient Service – VAMC Togus in Augusta
• VA Togus Chemical Dependency Program (IOP) – VAMC Togus in Augusta
• Adolescent Medicine – MaineHealth Maine Medical Center, South Portland
• MaineHealth Virology Treatment Center
• Perinatal Addiction Medicine – Portland
• Homeless Bridge Clinic - Preble St. Learning Collaborative, Portland

This structured training promotes capability and confidence in managing a range of addiction-related conditions.

Didactic Training

The didactic component of the fellowship includes:

• Neurobiology of Addiction (Core Curriculum)
• Pharmacology of Addiction (Core Curriculum)
• Treatment of Addiction (Core Curriculum)
• Journal Club (every other week)
• Case Conference (every other week)
• Advanced Training Seminar (monthly)
• Research Mentoring (monthly)
• Board Preparation (monthly)

Training Sites

Fellows primarily train at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center, which serves as the main campus. Additionally, they have the opportunity to gain experience at the Togus VA Medical Center and affiliated outpatient VA clinics, allowing for a diverse exposure to healthcare systems.

Application Process

The program accepts applications from graduates of ACGME-accredited residency programs as well as Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) accredited residency programs and College of Family Physicians Canada (CFPC) accredited residency programs. The selection process is competitive, as there are only two positions available each year.

Visa Support

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center supports visa sponsorship for international medical graduates, offering J-1 and H-1B visa options for eligible candidates.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The fellowship is highly competitive, and applicants should meet specific criteria, including graduating from an accredited residency program. There may be particular application requirements, such as a maximum number of failed STEP exams, which prospective fellows should confirm as they prepare their applications.
