Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program Overview

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program at Mercyhealth is dedicated to training the next generation of cardiologists, aiming to foster clinical research and excellence in cardiovascular disease management within the Rockford area and neighboring regions of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. The program is structured to provide fellows with a comprehensive educational and procedural experience, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills to deliver high-quality cardiovascular care.

Training and Rotations

Fellows participate in a diversified training experience at two primary sites: Javon Bea Hospital–Riverside in Rockford and Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville, Wisconsin. This multi-site approach allows fellows to engage with a diverse patient population and gain essential skills in diagnosing and managing various cardiovascular diseases.

Curriculum and Clinical Experience

The curriculum is designed to provide a well-rounded experience that integrates clinical practice with academic learning. Fellows will learn to offer autonomous, state-of-the-art cardiovascular care while emphasizing timely, equitable, and compassionate service. The program also focuses on the recognition of healthcare disparities within the cardiovascular domain.

Eligibility and Application Process

To be eligible, applicants must be currently enrolled in or have graduated from an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine or Internal Medicine Residency program. The selection process involves submission through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), including materials such as a curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, medical school transcripts, and USMLE or COMLEX scores. Early submission of application materials is advised.

Visa Support

The program does not sponsor J-1 visas, hence applicants must ensure they meet visa requirements through other means before applying.

Competitiveness

The fellowship program is considered competitive, thus prospective applicants should prepare a solid application demonstrating clinical acumen, research involvement, and strong letters of recommendation.

Salary and Benefits

Fellows receive a competitive salary with progression based on postgraduate year (PGY), starting from $71,250 for PGY-4 up to $73,250 for PGY-6. Additional benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, malpractice insurance, paid vacation, and relocation assistance among others. The program also reimburses for required licensure and certifications.

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship is supported by a robust faculty, including the Program Director and Assistant Program Director, both of whom bring extensive experience in cardiology and medical education. Their backgrounds encompass leading academic and clinical institutions, ensuring that fellows receive high-caliber mentorship and training.
