The Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program is designed to train physicians who exemplify clinical excellence and compassionate care, addressing health and healthcare disparities within the community served. Graduates from an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency who complete this fellowship will be equipped to achieve board eligibility in adult cardiovascular medicine after participating in a structured curriculum in line with ACGME guidelines.

Curriculum Overview

The fellowship offers a comprehensive curriculum tailored to the individual needs and professional goals of each fellow. The training encompasses various essential areas, including rotations in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, echocardiography, electrophysiology, critical care, and cardiology imaging. Fellows will spend significant time in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with one-half day each week dedicated to outpatient continuity clinic activities.

Training Rotations

The structure of the fellowship includes diverse rotations to ensure a well-rounded experience. The allocated months for various specialties include:

• 2 Months - Echocardiography

• 2 Months - Heart Failure/Palliative Care

All rotations are conducted under close supervision by full-time faculty members, ensuring that fellows receive in-depth education and mentorship throughout their training.

Didactics and Research Opportunities

Fellows will engage in weekly didactic sessions during an "academic half day" each Thursday, covering essential topics such as case reviews, board preparation, Grand Rounds, and patient safety discussions. Research is heavily emphasized, allowing fellows to tailor their projects to their interests, with opportunities to present their findings at the annual MLH Research Symposium.

Salary and Benefits

As fellows are considered hospital employees, they are entitled to a salary and benefits comparable to other full-time employees. The specifics of the salary and benefits will be discussed during the interview process. Additional benefits include free parking, a daily meal stipend, and three weeks of vacation annually. Fellows are also covered by malpractice insurance.

Application Process

The fellowship has a highly competitive application process, with two fellows recruited each year. Candidates must submit a personal statement, a minimum of three letters of recommendation (including one from the residency program director), transcripts reflecting successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX exams (including passing Step/Level 3), and a medical school transcript. Only individuals who have completed an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency will be considered for a position.
