About the Program

The Midwestern University GME Consortium / Mountain Vista Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is dedicated to providing exemplary training to its fellows. Set within the Mountain Vista Medical Center (MVMC) in Mesa, Arizona, the program combines advanced technology and expert faculty to ensure an enriching educational experience. This community-based hospital caters to a diverse patient population, allowing fellows to learn in various clinical settings and hone their skills in gastroenterology.

Program Mission

The mission of the program is to cultivate skilled clinicians and endoscopists through a comprehensive training regimen. Fellows will develop competencies in utilizing evidence-based medicine and advanced medical equipment, with an emphasis on holistic patient care that incorporates clinical, psychological, demographic, and social factors affecting health.

Aims of the Program

The program is committed to training gastroenterology fellows to be proficient in endoscopy and patient care. Specific aims include:

• Providing extensive didactic and hands-on training in endoscopic procedures.
• Ensuring fellows gain competence in performing routine endoscopic procedures such as upper and lower GI endoscopies.
• Enabling quality care for patients undergoing interventional procedures, with focus on patient follow-up and outcomes.
• Creating a supportive academic environment that fosters inquiry and knowledge dissemination.
• Equipping fellows for success in the American Board of Internal Medicine exams.
• Training fellows to navigate and understand modern healthcare systems and technology.

Curriculum Overview

The fellowship curriculum is meticulously designed to ensure fellows achieve competency across essential gastroenterology domains, including inflammatory bowel disease, nutrition, hepatology, oncology, and advanced endoscopy, among others. The structure consists of:

• Rotations organized into 1-month blocks, summing up to 12 blocks each year.
• Dedicated outpatient continuity clinics assigned to each fellow throughout the academic year.
• Elective rotations available during the PGY-5 and PGY-6 years.

Participating institutions for rotations include MVMC, Banner Gateway Medical Center, and Mayo Clinic, among others, thereby exposing fellows to a broad spectrum of experiences.

Application Process

The application process for the fellowship requires candidates to have completed an internal medicine residency in an accredited program. Each applicant must submit a comprehensive application through MyERAS®, including various documents such as a personal statement, letters of recommendation, transcripts, and a curriculum vita. Interviews occur in a structured format from mid-December to mid-January, and candidates should use this time to showcase their qualifications.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

Visa sponsorship is available for J-1 and H-1B visa applicants, allowing international medical graduates the opportunity to pursue their educational and professional goals within the fellowship.
