The Nephrology Fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens is a certified two-year program tailored for graduates from A.B.I.M. accredited internal medicine residencies. The program accepts five fellows, with two or three fellows being admitted in alternating years, providing an exclusive environment for specialized training in nephrology.

This fellowship offers an in-depth experience in both clinical nephrology and extra-corporeal treatments across inpatient, critical care, and outpatient settings. Curriculum Overview

The structure of the Nephrology training program incorporates significant inpatient and ambulatory training. Each fellow experiences three distinct inpatient rotations within a month-long interval across the year, totaling six months per year in clinical settings. The rotations encompass diverse patient populations, offering exposure to both private and non-private renal consultations, as well as primary care nephrology cases.

Inpatient Rotations

During inpatient rotations, fellows manage critical care nephrologic issues, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, as well as complications related to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The fellows act as consultants under the guidance of board-certified nephrologists, working closely with surgical, interventional radiology, and pathology services to enhance their clinical acumen.

Outpatient Experience

Outpatient training occurs at the state-of-the-art Trude Weishaupt Satellite Dialysis Center, where fellows provide care to a diverse cohort of dialysis patients. Over five months, trainees gain hands-on experience in patient management and gain familiarity with the equipment used in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Weekly clinics further supplement their training in managing chronic renal issues.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are encouraged to engage in clinical research, with specific time allocated during both outpatient and inpatient rotations for project development. Participation in at least one clinical research project is mandatory, and each fellow is paired with a faculty research preceptor to guide their projects.

Conferences and Education

Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, having completed a three-year accredited internal medicine program in the States and holding board certification in internal medicine if applicable.
