Clinical Training

Fellows gain substantial clinical experience through a diverse patient population at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, which encompasses a wide spectrum of nephrology-related disorders. The program includes a significant outpatient dialysis component, encompassing in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and home hemodialysis. Furthermore, fellows participate in a distinguished kidney transplant rotation at the NYU Langone Transplant Institute, which is known as one of the premier transplant centers nationwide.

During the first and second years of training, fellows rotate through various clinical areas including inpatient consultations, end-stage kidney disease services, chronic outpatient dialysis, and the transplant service. Participation in intensive academic activities increases during the second year, allowing fellows to explore elective rotations in pediatric nephrology, interventional radiology, ultrasound, and urology.

Scholarly Activities and Research Opportunities

The fellowship emphasizes scholarly activity with a rigorous weekly conference schedule. Educational conferences include Case Conference, Core Topics Conference, interdivisional conferences, Journal Club, Nephrology Board Review, Pathology Conference, Peritoneal Dialysis Conference, Renal Grand Rounds, and a dedicated Research Conference. This structured educational format ensures that fellows grasp the breadth of knowledge required for modern nephrology practice.

Fellows are encouraged to engage in a wide range of research initiatives covering various topics such as kidney physiology, hypertension, and clinical studies. They receive mentorship from faculty who are leaders in nephrology and have access to well-equipped kidney research laboratories, enabling them to conduct both basic science and clinical research.

Application Process and Requirements

The program accepts two fellows annually, with application submissions facilitated through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Interested candidates can begin submitting applications in July, followed by interviews held from September to October. It is essential for applicants to also register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), with results announced in December.

Visa Support

The Nephrology Fellowship program is friendly to international medical graduates (IMGs) and supports J-1 visa sponsorship for those who require it for their training.
