NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine Program

The Gastroenterology Fellowship at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine is a comprehensive three-year program designed to equip fellows with extensive skills and knowledge in gastroenterology, endoscopy, hepatology, and nutrition. The program emphasizes a well-rounded clinical training experience, fostering future leaders in gastrointestinal medicine.

Throughout the fellowship, fellows receive hands-on training in standard gastrointestinal procedures during the first year. The following years focus on advanced investigative and therapeutic modalities such as endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic stent placement, and various motility studies, including colonic and rectal motility. Additionally, fellows participate actively in weekly outpatient GI and liver clinics to reinforce their clinical exposure and patient management skills, including total parenteral nutrition.

Clinical Training

Clinical training primarily occurs at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, with additional experiences at Tisch Hospital for liver transplant rotations. Fellows work closely with a multidisciplinary team, gaining insights into a broad spectrum of digestive disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease, liver diseases, and enteral and parenteral nutrition. They are also exposed to specialized endoscopy services such as ERCP and advanced therapeutic endoscopic procedures.

Research Opportunities

The fellowship program encourages fellows to engage in clinical research in areas such as pancreatitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and motility disorders. Fellows can present their findings at prestigious national conferences, including the American Gastroenterological Association meetings, and participate in clinical trials through the NYU Langone Long Island Clinical Research Associates. The goal is to contribute to advancements in the treatment and understanding of various gastrointestinal conditions.

Application Process

The fellowship offers nine positions in total, with three openings available each year. Applicants can submit their application via the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS), which must include essential items such as a dean's letter, medical school transcript, letters of reference, a curriculum vitae, and a personal statement. Selected candidates are invited for interviews that take place from September through October. Special attention is given to trauma and resilience, assuring a supportive environment for fellows.
