4423544137The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at NYU Langone Health offers a comprehensive one-year training program through NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Designed to equip fellows for the complex management of critically ill surgical patients, this fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and accepts two fellows each year.
As part of the fellowship, participants rotate through a variety of critical care environments within the NYU Langone system. The primary training sites include Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and the NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. This exposure ensures that fellows gain a wide range of skills and experiences necessary for effective practice in surgical critical care.
Rotation Schedule
The rotation schedule is meticulously structured to cover several key aspects of critical care. Initially, fellows will start their training in one of the ICUs at Tisch Hospital or Kimmel Pavilion. The rotation schedule is as follows:
- Kimmel Pavilion Surgical ICU: 3 months
- Kimmel Pavilion Cardiovascular ICU: 3 months
- Tisch Hospital Medical ICU: 1 month
- Kimmel Pavilion Neurosciences ICU: 1 month
- NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn Trauma ICU: 2 months
- Bellevue Trauma ICU: 1 month
- Elective Rotation: 1 month
This diverse exposure allows fellows to manage specific organ failures, care for patients recovering from complex surgeries such as cardiothoracic and neurosurgery, and support patients facing acute trauma and major surgical complications.
Academic Responsibilities
During the fellowship, as the senior trainee on surgical rotations, fellows are encouraged to engage actively with residents and medical students from NYU Grossman School of Medicine. This collaboration is pivotal in enriching the educational experience for all involved. Additionally, fellows are expected to undertake a minimum of one project under faculty supervision, which is to be published and presented at a relevant local, regional, or national conference.
Benefits and Support
The fellowship program provides various benefits to its participants, including:
- Four weeks of vacation time
- A book fund for academic resources
- A travel stipend for conference attendance, subject to approval
Application Process
Prospective fellows must be nearing completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery training program and be eligible to sit for the American Board of Surgery examinations. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for surgical critical care fellowship matches. Applications should be submitted through the Surgical Critical Care Program Directors Society portal.
Competitiveness and Application Requirements
The program is known to be competitive, welcoming applications from both DO and IMG candidates. However, applicants should ensure they meet specific eligibility criteria regarding their training background and board examination status.
