The Anesthesiology Residency program at Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine is meticulously designed to equip residents with both the clinical skills and compassionate care necessary for effective anesthesiology practice. The program is dedicated to producing well-rounded anesthesiologists who can deliver anesthesia services across a broad spectrum of clinical environments and demographic populations.

Program Structure and Rotations

The residency is anchored at St. Vincent’s Medical Center (SVMC), a 473-bed facility within the Hartford HealthCare System, located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Serving one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the state for over 120 years, the program takes pride in providing excellent clinical training with a focus on a diverse patient population that often presents with significant co-morbidities. This experience prepares residents for a future of independent practice in anesthesia.

Residents are accepted into four advanced anesthesiology positions each year (PGY 2–4), maintaining a total of 12 residents within the program. Residents have the opportunity to link their advanced anesthesia training with a preliminary PGY-1 program, either in internal medicine at SVMC or surgery at Waterbury Hospital. The curriculum ensures residents are well-versed in key subspecialties including Acute Pain, Cardiovascular Anesthesia, Obstetric Anesthesia, Pediatric Anesthesia, and more. In their final year, residents can select electives that may include subspecialty training or research opportunities.

Didactic Curriculum

The didactic curriculum of the Anesthesiology Residency program is tailored to the specific needs of each postgraduate year (PGY). Residents participate in daily discussions, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, and grand rounds, all aimed at fostering an atmosphere of continuous learning and clinical excellence. Notably, a dedicated day each month is set aside for specific educational activities, including simulation training which creates hands-on learning experiences in both procedural and communication skills.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation package offered to residents is competitive and includes a bi-weekly salary, comprehensive medical benefits, dental and vision coverage, paid time off, and long-term disability insurance. The annual salary for PGY-1 residents starts at $69,405, escalating to $75,385 for PGY-3 residents, in addition to various other benefits such as professional liability insurance, free parking, and an employee assistance program.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The program is committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This commitment is deeply rooted in valuing individual uniqueness and promoting an environment of respect and acceptance. The aim is to ensure that all residents feel a sense of belonging within the program and the broader healthcare community.

Application Process

Applications to the residency program must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by November 30. Requirements include a comprehensive application with the USMLE Step I and Step II CK scores, a personal statement, four letters of reference, and a Dean's letter. The program accepts international applicants, supporting J1 visas for foreign graduates but not H-1B visas. Notably, any gaps between medical school graduation and residency application should not exceed two years, with preference for clinical experience in the United States during that period.

Research Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to engage in research initiatives throughout their training, further enhancing their understanding of anesthetic practices and innovations. Research months are incorporated into the curriculum, allowing residents to explore specialized interests and contribute to advancements in the field.
