Overview

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital is a training program designed for physicians who wish to specialize in pediatric emergency care. This program is known for its comprehensive curriculum, clinical exposure, and research opportunities, providing a rich learning environment tailored for developing future leaders in pediatric emergency medicine.

Program Overview

Established in 2000, the fellowship program has expanded in size and depth, currently training a total of seven fellows. The primary objective is to equip trainees with excellent clinical skills, resources for independent research, and opportunities for educational development. The program fosters an environment that encourages clinical independence, research expertise, and engagement in educational endeavors.

Clinical Training

Clinical training focuses on equipping fellows with the knowledge and skills necessary for independent practice. The initial 3 to 6 months of fellowship involve closely supervised shifts in the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED), allowing fellows to gain the foundational knowledge while advancing towards greater autonomy in clinical decision-making over the years. The rotation schedule consists of a 3-year curriculum for Pediatric-trained fellows and a 2-year curriculum for Emergency Medicine-trained fellows.

2

An emphasis is placed on concise documentation, and fellows are required to maintain a log of procedures performed throughout their training. Each fellow is also expected to complete an annual specialty in-training exam (SITE).

Educational Settings

The primary training site, Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital, is recognized as a comprehensive pediatric facility, providing a variety of primary, trauma, and tertiary care services. The hospital boasts a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department with 24/7 attending coverage, significantly enhancing the clinical learning environment. Additionally, fellows have the opportunity to gain experience at external facilities, including a nearby Level II trauma center, which serves as an essential component of their training.
