Set in the picturesque landscape of Northeast Pennsylvania, the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Guthrie Clinic/Robert Packer Hospital offers a comprehensive and rigorous training program designed to produce proficient clinicians in both pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine. The program’s 267-bed tertiary care hospital, equipped with a Level 1 Trauma Center, serves a diverse patient population from 13 counties, providing fellows with a broad array of clinical experiences and challenges.

Curriculum Overview

The fellowship curriculum spans twelve months, incorporating a variety of rotations that include Medical Critical Care, Surgical Critical Care, Cardiothoracic Surgery, outpatient and inpatient care, research, sleep studies, and elective opportunities. Each fellow serves six months on a consult service, managing patients hospitalized with diverse pulmonary conditions. In addition, fellows will rotate within a dedicated bronchoscopy suite to gain essential skills in pulmonary procedures, including basic procedures like thoracentesis and bronchoscopy, as well as advanced procedures like endobronchial ultrasound and argon plasma coagulation.13

Fellows will also hone their non-invasive ventilation skills in managing respiratory failure, alongside hands-on training in critical care ultrasound and echocardiography. Furthermore, a continuity clinic at the Pulmonary Ambulatory Clinic allows fellows to engage in outpatient care one afternoon per week.
