Program Overview

The San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Program in Pediatrics at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) - Fort Sam Houston provides an extensive residency training environment for military pediatricians. This three-year program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), is centered on comprehensive pedagogical methods, encouraging residents to grow into competent and compassionate pediatricians prepared for a variety of healthcare settings, including military operations.

All applicants must be active-duty members of the U.S. Military, and a categorical year in the specialty is required. The program has a total of 42 approved residents, with 14 new positions available annually. Importantly, this program does not offer a dedicated research year, thus encouraging residents to engage in manageable research activities alongside clinical training.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is designed to incorporate a robust educational structure with dedicated morning conferences held Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. These sessions typically include a patient case presentation followed by a formal lecture led by faculty. Additionally, noon didactics in the continuity clinic provide ongoing educational opportunities.

Residents participate in rotations that encompass various patient care environments, including outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, pediatric intensive care units (PICU), neonatal intensive care units (NICU), and newborn nurseries. Rotational experiences span multiple healthcare facilities such as Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, and local civilian hospitals, including Christus Children's Hospital and Methodist Children's Hospital.

Research and Scholarly Activities

Residents have ample opportunities to engage in scholarly activities. All residents are required to work with a designated research advisor to initiate a clinical study or publish a case report. This structured approach is designed to foster a spirit of inquiry and academic growth throughout the residency. Available platforms for presentation include national conferences such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Specialty Society meetings.

Unique Program Features

The SAUSHEC Pediatrics program integrates unique military-specific training elements, particularly in combat readiness and humanitarian assistance. Residents participate in various unique educational courses such as the Tactical Combat Medical Care (TCMC) course and the Military Medical Humanitarian Assistance Course, honing skills vital for operational settings.

This residency program operates in collaboration with multiple training sites, centralizing around BAMC as the primary site, complemented by partnerships with facilities such as the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center and various community and academic hospitals within San Antonio. Due to the nature of the program, it is particularly competitive. All applicants must demonstrate previous clinical experience, typically through a completed core pediatrics clerkship prior to application. Special considerations include active-duty status and established agreements for rotations, indicating strong collaboration between military and educational institutions.
