The Neuropathology Fellowship at Stanford is a comprehensive two-year, ACGME-accredited training program designed to prepare the next leaders in neuropathology and neuroscience. The program emphasizes hands-on experience and research opportunities within a robust academic and clinical environment.

Program Overview

Each year, one position is available for qualified candidates. The fellowship's unique structure allows fellows to be involved in a wide range of clinical and research activities, making it a pivotal point for those aspiring to specialize in neuropathology. As a fellow, candidates will benefit from the extensive case volume the service receives, encompassing over 800 biopsies, 300 muscle biopsies, 600 consultations, and 200 brain autopsies from multiple training sites including Stanford Hospital and the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Clinical Rotations

Trainees in the program are extensively involved in the examination of neurosurgical specimens. This includes providing intraoperative consultations, working with frozen sections, and performing cytological preparations. Clinical exposure extends to muscle and nerve pathology, as well as molecular studies including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. The rigorous clinical training is designed to cultivate diagnostic acumen in a variety of neurology-related diseases, further enhanced through joint conferences with the Clinical Neuroscience Department.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are encouraged to engage in research projects throughout their training, and the second year is primarily research-focused. Each fellow’s research interests can vary, with specific encouragement for those with a background in neuroscience. Additional funding may be available for graduates of the Stanford AP/NP residency program, promoting careers in academic research.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the fellowship, candidates must possess Anatomic Pathology (AP) or combined Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) training and be eligible for a California medical license. The application process includes reviewing complete applications on a rolling basis.

Visa Support

The fellowship program supports international applicants through ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visas. Notably, graduates from Canadian medical schools are not subject to additional testing requirements, provided visa applications are compliant with the relevant Canadian government regulations. The program specifically notes that no H-1B visas are sponsored.

Stipend Details

Stipends for fellows are commensurate with experience and aligned with the general residency stipends provided at Stanford Health Care, ensuring competitive compensation throughout the training.
