The Transfusion Medicine Pathology Fellowship at Stanford University is an ACGME-accredited program designed to prepare physicians for specialized practice in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. Upon completion, fellows will be equipped to fulfill the roles of Medical Director for transfusion services in both hospital settings and regional blood centers.

This training paradigm transcends traditional blood banking, incorporating dimensions such as immunohematology, apheresis, cell therapy, coagulation, and hematology. Trainees get full exposure to managing transfusion medicine cases involving diverse patient populations including adults, pediatrics, obstetric, and neonatal patients across various clinical settings such as inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care.

Curriculum and Rotations

The fellowship offers hands-on experience that includes antibody identification, complex serology evaluations, management of transfusion reactions, blood component inventory analysis, apheresis consultations, and massive transfusion support. Furthermore, fellows have a significant opportunity to engage with the Immunohematology Reference Laboratory and work collaboratively with the Stanford Blood Center's medical and technical staff, providing a comprehensive training experience.

Additional experiences include rotations in the HLA laboratory, stem cell collection and processing, coagulation studies, and specialized studies on red blood cells (RBC).

Training Environment

Fellows will benefit from an integrated educational experience with close association with the Stanford Blood Center and involvement in various clinical activities including donor screening and testing. The program emphasizes additional research opportunities in either the Department of Pathology or other relevant clinical areas, providing fellows the flexibility to pursue specific interests. Eligibility and Application Requirements

To apply, candidates must be board certified or eligible in a primary specialty which includes Clinical Pathology, Hematology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, or Anesthesiology. An accomplishment in a prior fellowship or completion of residency training is also vital.

The application process requires the submission of a completed Standardized Fellowship Application form (CAP), an updated Curriculum Vitae (CV), a cover letter or personal statement, and three letters of recommendation. Applications are typically accepted around 24 months before the intended fellowship start date.

Visa Sponsorship

The fellowship program supports visa applications for international candidates. Graduates of Canadian medical schools are generally placed on ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visas, with no requirement to complete qualifying examinations such as FMGEMS, NBME, or USMLE. For non-Canadian candidates, the J-1 visa is the only visa type supported, as the program does not sponsor H-1B visas.

Stipends and Benefits

Fellowship stipends are competitive and based on the fellow's postdoctoral training level, equating to general residency stipends at Stanford Health Care.
