Curriculum Overview

Clinical Rotations

Fellows will rotate through several key areas, including the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Cardiovascular Imaging, Electrophysiology, and the Catheterization Laboratory. The CICU admits nearly 1,000 patients annually and provides fellows with essential training in managing acute ischemic heart disease and other critical cardiac conditions.

The Cardiovascular Imaging section offers training across multiple modalities, including echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and advanced cardiac MRI and CT techniques. Fellows perform echocardiograms, participate in advanced imaging procedures, and are trained to interpret the studies under the supervision of expert cardiologists.

Interventional Cardiology Training

Training in the cath lab includes exposure to various interventional techniques, including balloon angioplasty, stenting, and structural heart interventions. Additionally, fellows participate in the institution's active STEMI response team, which involves critical decision-making and acute care interventions for heart attack patients.

Research Opportunities

The program emphasizes research, with many fellows presenting their work at national meetings. They are encouraged to engage in ongoing research studies, particularly in areas relevant to their clinical interests. Training Sites

Fellows predominantly train at Stony Brook University Medical Center, a Level I trauma center and the region's only tertiary care facility. They also have opportunities to engage with patients at the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital, where additional clinical experiences in advanced cardiovascular imaging and various cardiology subspecialties are provided.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The fellowship program at Stony Brook is competitive, aiming to recruit the most qualified candidates regardless of their medical background. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are welcomed, provided they meet specific application requirements and have graduated from recognized medical schools. The program strictly requires valid ECFMG certification for IMGs, and applicants on H-1 visas are not considered.

The program sponsors J-1 visas for eligible candidates through the ECFMG. It does not provide H-1B visa sponsorship. Applicants must ensure adequate time remains on their J-1 status to complete the fellowship before expiration.
