Stony Brook Medicine/University Hospital Program

The Nephrology Fellowship Program at Stony Brook Medicine is designed to offers an extensive post-graduate training experience, targeted at producing exceptional clinical and academic nephrologists. Established in 1980, the program has trained over 100 fellows and aims to integrate formal education, hands-on experience, and independence, giving fellows exposure to diverse aspects of nephrology, including dialysis modalities, transplantation, hypertension management, and ICU nephrology.

The fellowship comprises a two-year clinical program, with an opportunity for an additional year focused on critical care for those who wish to enhance their training. One fellow per year is designated for the Nephro-critical care track, which allows them to complete their accreditation in both nephrology and critical care. The fellowship nurtures careers in academic medicine through robust research opportunities and offers a dedicated ultrasound curriculum for enhanced nephrology training.

Training Structure

Each fellow is required to adhere to a structured curriculum that emphasizes both patient care and research. The program supports 7 fellows in total; it typically accepts 2-3 new fellows annually. Moreover, fellows benefit from assistance by 3 full-time nurse practitioners, which optimally supports both inpatient and outpatient initiatives.

Fellows gain experience through varied rotations primarily at Stony Brook University Hospital, a tertiary care and Regional Trauma Center with 695 beds, recognized for excellence in quality healthcare. The curriculum includes inpatient rotations at the Northport VA Medical Center, allowing for care provision to veterans, and exposure to a comprehensive renal transplantation program.

Research Opportunities

The program allows for dedicated research time, providing 1-2 protected months annually within the fellowship timeline. Additionally, fellows can pursue a third year of research training for those interested in academia, significantly broadening their educational and professional horizons.

Since 2017, one fellow each year has transitioned into Critical Care Medicine Training through the joint Nephrology-Critical Care track.
