Stony Brook Medicine/University Hospital Surgical Pathology Program

The Stony Brook Medicine Department of Pathology Residency Training Program is designed to provide an extensive education in both Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP). Program Overview

The goal of the residency program at Stony Brook is to equip its graduates with comprehensive knowledge in the practice of pathology. The program offers various training tracks, including combined AP and CP, AP only, or CP only training paths. Residents typically spend the first two years focusing on essential training with an emphasis on surgical pathology and clinical rotations, while the last two years allow for further specialization in their area of interest through advanced and elective rotations.1

Clinical Training

The Stony Brook residency program comprises an integrated four-year training structure. In the initial year, residents engage primarily in surgical pathology and autopsy rotations, alongside a limited number of clinical pathology experiences. The second year is predominantly focused on clinical pathology rotations to broaden the residents' exposure to this important area.1

During the third and fourth years, the program provides opportunities to take advanced and elective rotations, including areas such as dermatopathology, neuropathology, and gastrointestinal pathology among others. All core rotations are conducted at Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC), except for forensic pathology, which takes place at the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.1

The program offers sponsorship for J-1 visas for international medical graduates (IMGs). However, it is essential to note that Stony Brook does not sponsor H1B visas for graduate medical education (GME) training. Applicants must demonstrate completion of USMLE within a maximum of two attempts to meet the program's requirements.1

Competitiveness and Application Process

Stony Brook’s surgical pathology residency program is considered competitive, with specific criteria for applicants. To enhance their chances, applicants should ideally have strong USMLE scores, preferably ranking in the top 60th percentile or better, along with experiences in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology, and a track record of research participation.
