3013500087The Stony Brook Medicine Department of Pathology Residency Training Program is designed to provide an extensive education in both Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP). The program emphasizes the development of technical skills, knowledge, and the attitudes necessary for a successful career in pathology, along with a commitment to lifelong learning.1
Program Overview
The goal of the residency program at Stony Brook is to equip its graduates with comprehensive knowledge in the practice of pathology. The program offers various training tracks, including combined AP and CP, AP only, or CP only training paths. Residents typically spend the first two years focusing on essential training with an emphasis on surgical pathology and clinical rotations, while the last two years allow for further specialization in their area of interest through advanced and elective rotations.1
Clinical Training
The Stony Brook residency program comprises an integrated four-year training structure. In the initial year, residents engage primarily in surgical pathology and autopsy rotations, alongside a limited number of clinical pathology experiences. The second year is predominantly focused on clinical pathology rotations to broaden the residents' exposure to this important area.1
During the third and fourth years, the program provides opportunities to take advanced and elective rotations, including areas such as dermatopathology, neuropathology, and gastrointestinal pathology among others. All core rotations are conducted at Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC), except for forensic pathology, which takes place at the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.1
Conferences and Educational Activities
Residents at Stony Brook participate in several conferences throughout their training, facilitating a rich educational environment. These include didactic AP conferences, CP working rounds, autopsy conferences, and multidisciplinary tumor boards. Participation in journal clubs and departmental seminars further enhances their learning experience.1
Research Opportunities
Research forms a crucial component of the residency training at Stony Brook. Residents are expected to engage in at least one substantial research project before graduation. The department provides ample support for research endeavors, including faculty mentorship, and opportunities for research presentations at national meetings. This program is well-equipped with facilities conducive to a broad range of research, from bench science to translational studies.1
Teaching Activities
Stony Brook places a strong emphasis on the development of teaching skills among its residents. Residents frequently assist in teaching medical students, other residents, and members from various healthcare departments. This experience is vital not only for their professional development but also in fostering a culture of learning within the institution.1
Fellowship Opportunities
Upon completion of the residency, many graduates choose to pursue further fellowship training. Stony Brook provides four ACGME-accredited fellowship opportunities in various specialties, including Selective Pathology (Surgical Pathology), Cytopathology, Hematopathology, and Pathology Informatics.1
Visa Support and Requirements
The program offers sponsorship for J-1 visas for international medical graduates (IMGs). However, it is essential to note that Stony Brook does not sponsor H1B visas for graduate medical education (GME) training. Applicants must demonstrate completion of USMLE within a maximum of two attempts to meet the program's requirements.1
Competitiveness and Application Process
Stony Brook’s surgical pathology residency program is considered competitive, with specific criteria for applicants. To enhance their chances, applicants should ideally have strong USMLE scores, preferably ranking in the top 60th percentile or better, along with experiences in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology, and a track record of research participation. The program adheres to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) guidelines with a structured application deadline and requirements, including official transcripts and letters of recommendation.1
