The Stony Brook Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship is a 12-month, ACGME-accredited program that is designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in obstetric anesthesiology. The program runs from August 1 to July 31 and focuses on providing safe, high-quality anesthetic care for pregnant patients. A key component of the fellowship is to encourage fellows to act as advocates for parturients to improve maternal health outcomes, emphasizing the importance of safe practice in obstetric anesthesiology.
1Aims of the Fellowship
The fellowship program is structured around several key aims:
- Comprehensive Clinical Training: Fellows are expected to gain extensive hands-on experience in various areas, including labor analgesia, cesarean delivery anesthesia, and the management of obstetric emergencies. This clinical experience is facilitated at a large academic center that handles a significant volume of complex cases, allowing fellows to engage in a comprehensive educational experience.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The program encourages collaboration with obstetricians, neonatologists, and other healthcare professionals, promoting a multidisciplinary approach to maternal-fetal care. This collaboration is instrumental in enhancing communication and teamwork skills among fellows.
- Research Integration: Engagement in scholarly activities is a priority, and fellows are encouraged to conduct research projects or partake in quality improvement initiatives that contribute to evidence-based practices in obstetric anesthesiology.
- Education and Teaching Excellence: Opportunities for fellows to refine their teaching skills are provided, allowing them to lead didactic sessions and educational activities for residents and medical students.
- Patient Safety and Quality Improvement: The program emphasizes patient safety, encouraging fellows to participate in morbidity and mortality reviews and to seek opportunities to enhance patient care processes through active problem solving.
- Leadership Development: Fellows are supported in developing leadership abilities by involving them in departmental meetings and providing mentorship from experienced faculty members.
Fellowship Rotations
The fellowship consists of 13 four-week block rotations, incorporating a blend of clinical specialty training and research:
- 10 rotations dedicated to clinical obstetric anesthesiology, encompassing a total of 20% (1 day/week) research time throughout these rotations.
- 1 rotation of clinical research.
- 1 rotation in Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) and Neonatology (NICU).
- Additional rotations include 2 weeks of maternal fetal medicine, 2 weeks of neonatology, and rotations in blood bank/transfusion medicine and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
Fellows are entitled to 4 weeks of vacation, which can be utilized during the year depending on their clinical anesthesiology rotations.
