Residency Advisor

The Obstetric Anesthesia Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital is an intensive 12-month training program focused on providing comprehensive anesthetic management, perioperative care, and pain management for women during pregnancy and the puerperium. The fellowship is designed for candidates who have completed an ACGME-accredited residency program in anesthesiology.

The fellowship aims to recruit and train future leaders in obstetric anesthesia, who will demonstrate intellectual curiosity, teaching capacity, and the skills necessary to manage complex clinical issues during the care of pregnant patients. In addition, fellows are encouraged to engage in innovative research to advance the field of obstetric anesthesia and obstetric medicine.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the fellowship combines a robust lecture program with simulation training, enhancing fellows' proficiency in caring for obstetric patients. The didactic component includes a broad range of topics, such as:

  • Case conferences
  • Daily hands-on education and discussions with obstetric anesthesia faculty
  • Faculty lectures
  • Grand Rounds
  • Journal Club
  • One month of simulation training
  • One to four obstetric anesthesia lectures per week

In addition, simulations will be conducted in situ on the Labor and Delivery Unit, and fellows will participate in multidisciplinary clinical rounds twice daily.

Core Rotations

The core experience of the fellowship focuses on clinical rotations that include:

  1. Simulation Experience (one month): In this portion, fellows engage in team courses on crisis resource management during labor and delivery, complete a management course certification, and obtain CITI certification for ethics in human subjects research.
  2. Operating Room and Labor and Delivery Clinical Activity (seven months): Fellows manage anesthetic care for a range of patients from healthy to high-risk pregnant patients with various co-morbidities.
  3. Surgical Intensive Care Unit (one month): Care of critically ill pregnant women, with longitudinal follow-up for patients requiring surgical interventions.
  4. Neonatology (two weeks): Involvement in routine neonatal care and resuscitation training.
  5. Maternal-Fetal Medicine (two weeks): Exposure to high-risk antepartum care with opportunities in clinics.
  6. Research/Academics/Elective (three months): A dedicated period for research or clinical electives, contributing to scholarly projects aimed for national presentation.

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

Selection for the fellowship is highly competitive. To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from a medical school accredited by either the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or the American Osteopathic Association. Additionally, candidates from international medical schools must possess a valid ECFMG certificate and an unrestricted practice license in the U.S.

All applicants must complete the SF match application process and submit the following documents: a current CV in the specified format, a medical school transcript, and any other relevant materials.

Visa Support

The program provides visa support for international applicants. Individuals in need of visas to participate in the fellowship can inquire about J-1 visa options through the registrar's office, while other visa types can be discussed with the Mass General Brigham International Office.

Diversity and Inclusivity

The program is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. Efforts from the DEI Committee aim to ensure that all fellows feel a true sense of belonging, further enhancing the collaborative and supportive nature of the program.
