SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University/One Brooklyn Health System Program

The Neurology Residency Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University/One Brooklyn Health System is designed to serve the local community of Central and Northeast Brooklyn, which has a diverse population with marked health inequities. The program aims to train residents to become competent neurologists who can address the needs of these communities.

The program is sponsored by SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, and residents receive training at the One Brooklyn Health (OBH) system, primarily at OBH-Brookdale Hospital. The curriculum includes inpatient rotations, continuity clinics, and specialty clinics at OBH facilities.

Residents participate in educational experiences such as morning reports, noon conferences, and various specialty conferences throughout the year. The program emphasizes professionalism, teamwork, and continuous learning to provide high-quality care while addressing health disparities.

The evaluation process involves competency-based learning objectives, rotation-specific evaluations, and milestone assessments by the Clinical Competency Committee and Program Director. Residents are expected to take the Neurology RITE examination and receive feedback to guide their learning.

The residency structure includes 13 four-week blocks per year, with vacation time and rotations in various neurology specialties across the three years of training. The schedule adheres to work hour regulations and includes night float and weekend coverage responsibilities.

Moonlighting is allowed for senior residents with approval, and wellness initiatives are in place to support resident well-being. Residents also play a role in teaching medical students and engaging in scholarly activities, including research and publications.

The Program Director of the Neurology Residency Program is Dr. Lisa R. Merlin, MD. The core and key faculty members are involved in training residents, and the program fosters a supportive learning environment for residents to develop into independent neurologists.

The current residents in the program are dedicated to their training and continue to contribute to the educational environment. The program encourages scholarly activities and provides resources for residents to engage in research and quality improvement projects.
