Tulane University Program

The Cytopathology Fellowship Program at Tulane University School of Medicine is a one-year ACGME-accredited program designed to develop proficiency in all aspects of cytopathology. This fellowship includes in-depth training in interpreting both gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, as well as performing and interpreting fine needle aspiration biopsies. The primary training locations for this fellowship are Tulane University School of Medicine (TUSOM) and Ochsner Medical Center (OMC). Over an immersive year, fellows will spend a total of eight months at Tulane, receiving direct supervision from the program director, and four months at OMC under the supervision of the director of cytopathology.

The cytopathology section at TUSOM processes over 5,800 specimens annually, comprised of approximately 4,900 gynecological samples, 610 non-gynecological samples, and 310 aspiration cytologies. Conversely, at OMC, fellows will be exposed to a significantly larger volume of clinical cases, with over 49,000 cytology cases annually, including 42,000 liquid-based ThinPrep tests and more complex specimens requiring nuanced clinical interpretation.

Curriculum and Educational Goals

During the fellowship, fellows are expected to achieve comprehensive mastery of diagnostic skills and understanding necessary for effective clinical practice. Specific educational goals include:

• Learning cytofixation and cytopreparation, including specialized techniques like liquid-based Pap tests.
• Acquiring competence in the performance and interpretation of fine needle aspirations, utilizing clinical and radiologic data.
• Understanding and implementing quality control and assurance procedures vital for managing a cytology lab.
• Developing effective communication skills to interact with technical staff and clinicians.

Fellows will also have opportunities to present cases at conferences, ensuring they can articulate their findings clearly and address inquiries competently.

Research Opportunities

Research is an encouraged aspect of the fellowship, with opportunities for fellows to engage in clinically relevant translational research. Structured research time is provided daily, allowing two hours at the end of each working day dedicated to research activities. Additionally, fellows can elect to take an extra month for research, exploring particular interests or advancing understanding in fields related to cytopathology.

Fellowship Requirements

Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria to apply for the fellowship:

• M.D. or D.O. degree (or foreign equivalent, with ECFMG certification).
• Board eligibility or certification in anatomic pathology.
• Eligibility for a Louisiana medical license.

The fellowship program only supports J1 Visa sponsorship, focusing on international candidates who meet the required qualifications. Furthermore, candidates must submit a personal statement, a detailed CV, copies of USMLE Steps I-III, and three letters of recommendation directed to the program director.

Competitiveness and Application Process

The Cytopathology Fellowship at Tulane is regarded as a competitive program due to the high volume of cases and the comprehensive training offered. Stipend and Financial Considerations

The fellowship stipend is aligned with the year of postgraduate training, supporting fellows financially throughout their year of training.
