Fellowship

The Hand Surgery Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center is a comprehensive program designed to develop advanced skills in clinical hand and upper extremity surgery. This fellowship offers fellows the opportunity to be involved in diverse cases related to elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand trauma, adult reconstruction, neuromuscular disorders, congenital deformities, trauma, and microsurgery.

Fellows play an integral role within a multidisciplinary clinical team at a level I trauma center, the VA hospital, and a children's hospital, thereby gaining extensive hands-on experience. The fellowship also includes access to a microvascular surgery laboratory for practicing advanced surgical techniques in a controlled environment.

Curriculum Overview

The fellowship is closely integrated with the Orthopedic Residency Program at UC San Diego, encouraging academic and clinical collaboration. Educational activities consist of:

  • A weekly hand and upper extremity surgery journal club
  • A monthly hand surgery conference
  • A comprehensive 13-week anatomy series featuring cadaver dissection
  • Participation in weekly Grand Rounds and basic science trauma conferences

Fellows are provided with protected research time, during which they are expected to complete a focused research project related to hand and upper extremity surgery. Opportunities for collaborative research with faculty in basic science labs further enhance the educational experience.

Program Structure

The fellowship lasts for one year, from August 1 to July 31, and provides a stipend commensurate with the fellow's level of training (PGY 5 or 6), along with benefits. The main training sites include the UC San Diego Medical Center and the San Diego VA Medical Center.

Compliance with COVID-19 vaccination policies is mandatory for all healthcare personnel, including fellows, unless an exemption for medical or religious reasons is obtained.

Application Process

To be eligible for the Hand Surgery Fellowship, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Must be board-qualified or board-certified.
  • Must have obtained a California Medical License and a California Fluoroscopy License before the fellowship starts.
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in orthopedic or plastic surgery is required.

The application process involves participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), and all applications must be submitted electronically through the appropriate channels. Required documents for the application include:

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Medical school transcript
  • Standardized Test Scores (USMLE or equivalent)

The application deadline is November 15, 2024, with interview dates planned for February 2025. Interviews will be conducted in person.

Visa Support

The program can provide visa sponsorship for international medical graduates (IMGs) who fulfill standard eligibility requirements. Common visa types sponsored by the program include the J-1 visa, which is typically available for fellowship training, and the H-1B visa for those seeking employment post-training.

Competitiveness and Special Requirements

The Hand Surgery Fellowship is highly competitive, with a selective application process. It is generally open to both DO and IMG candidates, given that they meet the necessary prerequisites outlined above. Specific requirements include not having exceeded a certain number of failed Step exams (though this number can vary), thus maintaining a stringent applicant quality standard.

Overall, the Hand Surgery Fellowship at UC San Diego Medical Center is structured to provide a robust academic and clinical learning environment with ample opportunities for professional growth and research.
