Overview

Program Overview

The UConn Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Program is a two-year, ACGME-accredited program structured to prepare individuals for careers in both clinical and academic endocrinology. This rigorous training, which is offered through UConn Health and affiliated hospitals including Hartford Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital, and others, includes diverse clinical rotations that ensure comprehensive exposure to various aspects of endocrinology.

1

The program aims to produce highly competent, independent endocrinology consultants who are well-equipped to manage both common and rare endocrine disorders. An essential component of the fellowship involves promoting critical thinking, professionalism, and lifelong learning skills in the trainees.

1

Curriculum and Rotations

The fellowship involves a blend of inpatient and outpatient experiences across multiple facilities. During the first year, fellows rotate through inpatient endocrinology consult services, outpatient clinics, and a weekly continuity clinic where they learn to manage patients longitudinally under direct supervision. This setup promotes a comprehensive understanding of various endocrine disorders, including both rare and common conditions.

8

The second year includes continued services and the opportunity to rotate through subspecialty clinics such as Pediatric and Reproductive Endocrinology. Noteworthy, fellows participate in advanced procedures like ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspirations, dynamic endocrine testing, and supervision of medical students and residents.

8

Research and Scholarly Activity

The fellowship program places a significant emphasis on research and scholarly activity. Fellows are encouraged to engage in hypothesis-driven endocrine research and are provided with opportunities to contribute to ongoing faculty-led research initiatives. Specific topics include bone metabolism, endocrine neoplasia, and diabetes care.

7

Fellows also gain experiences presenting their findings at notable conferences, contributing to publications, and participating in clinical trials, enhancing their learning and preparing them for future academic and clinical roles.

7

Faculty and Mentorship

The program boasts an esteemed faculty comprising nationally and internationally recognized leaders in both clinical and research endocrinology. Faculty members are deeply committed to teaching and mentoring fellows, ensuring a supportive and productive educational environment. Fellows receive guidance from faculty with diverse specializations, fostering a rich learning experience and professional development.

1

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity is a core value of the program, reflected in its admissions process and the educational opportunities provided to fellows. The program is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment that embraces race, gender, age, and other factors, and actively promotes discussions around diversity and equity in health care.

1

Application Process

Applicants interested in the fellowship must submit their credentials via ERAS. Important documentation includes a CV, medical school transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. The fellowship has no cutoff year since graduation from medical school but requires passing USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3. Importantly, UConn accepts applicants of U.S. citizenship or those with valid documentation (J-1 visa status) but does not sponsor H1B or O visas.

2

Competitiveness and Selection Criteria

Given its prestige, the program is considered highly competitive, drawing many qualified candidates. Fellows are selected based on academic merit, preparedness, ability, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation, integrity, and leadership potential.

2

Well-Being and Support

The UConn program prioritizes the well-being of its fellows, promoting a healthy work-life balance. Initiatives on wellness include optional yoga sessions, mindfulness training, and scheduled social events to foster camaraderie and reduce stress among fellows. There are comprehensive resources available through UConn Health focusing on mental health and emotional well-being throughout the training period.

9

Training Sites

The fellowship utilizes multiple prestigious sites for comprehensive training including UConn Health, Hartford Hospital, and The Hospital of Central Connecticut, allowing trainees to encounter a rich variety of cases and treatment methodologies. Key features of training involve a focus on diverse patient populations and the collaboration with various specialized services.
