Stony Brook Medicine/University Hospital Program

The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism fellowship program at Stony Brook Medicine is designed to provide a comprehensive training experience for future endocrinologists. Program Overview

The fellowship offers two positions annually and requires the completion of a three-year internal medicine residency before acceptance. Ideal candidates are U.S. citizens or possess valid visas, as H visas are not accepted within the fellowship structure. Additionally, international medical graduates must provide proof of having passed the FMGEMS exam and provide the required ECFMG certification before applying. Applications are managed through ERAS, and all documentation must be complete for review by the committee.

Curriculum and Clinical Rotations

The curriculum includes a wide array of clinical experiences distributed between two primary training sites: Stony Brook University Hospital and the Northport VA Medical Center. Stony Brook University Hospital is a major teaching facility with 603 beds and over 100,000 emergency visits yearly. The fellowship emphasizes both inpatient and outpatient settings, ensuring fellows rotate through multiple specialties within endocrinology.

Fellows participate in four weekly clinics, including a VA continuity clinic, an SB continuity clinic, a fine needle aspiration/sonography clinic, and an urgent care endocrinology clinic. This variety ensures exposure to a wide spectrum of endocrinology cases, enhancing the fellows' clinical competencies.

Conferences

Educational experiences are augmented by dedicated conference days. Wednesdays host fellows-oriented core lectures and board review sessions, while Fridays are reserved for joint conferences between faculty and fellows, allowing for collaborative discussions on complex cases and questions.

Training Sites

The majority of training occurs at Stony Brook University Hospital, which is characterized as the busiest facility in Suffolk County. The program also utilizes the Northport VA Medical Center, which provides invaluable services to veterans, ensuring fellows receive well-rounded training in a variety of clinical contexts. Additionally, outpatient care is conducted at specialized facilities, including the Stony Brook Diabetes Center.

Research Opportunities

Fellows are encouraged to engage in research activities throughout their training.
