The Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at Stony Brook is a rigorous ACGME-approved training path emphasizing both clinical and research elements for physicians aiming to specialize in infectious diseases. The program spans two to three years, during which three fellowship positions are awarded annually. As a fellow, one experiences an extensive range of complex infectious disease cases, including rare conditions unique to the Long Island region and challenges such as HIV/AIDS, burn-related infections, and healthcare-associated infections among others. Cases are referred from a tertiary care teaching hospital, Stony Brook University Hospital, and the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
1Clinical Experience
The fellowship offers an immersive clinical experience. Fellows engage in a robust curriculum that prioritizes exposure to a diverse patient population with a wide array of infectious diseases. Exposure includes consultations in various settings, from intensive care units to outpatient clinics. This comprehensive clinical training ensures fellows gain valuable hands-on experience with distinct infectious diseases prevalent in the community.
1Didactic Education
The educational component of the fellowship includes divisional conferences comprising weekly journal clubs, clinical case discussions, and monthly research conferences. An annual lecture series encompasses topics such as immunology, biostatistics, and public health. This structured academic support underpins the clinical training, enhancing the fellows' understanding and management of infectious diseases.
1Curriculum Structure
The training curriculum is methodically crafted to develop clinical expertise in infectious diseases. Fellows undergo a sequence of rotations at Stony Brook University Hospital and Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Components include:
- 5 months on infectious diseases consultation service
- 5 months on the immunocompromised/transplant ID service
- 4 months on consultation service at the VA
- 5 months of dedicated research time
- 4 months in an outpatient clinic
- 1 month in microbiology and orientation
Alongside clinical duties, fellows supervise and educate medical residents and students to foster an environment of learning and growth.
3Research Opportunities
The fellowship promotes a strong research culture. Fellows are encouraged to engage in ongoing research collaborations within the Infectious Disease division, which covers diverse topics such as mycology, nosocomial infections, Lyme disease, and antimicrobial stewardship. Fellows also have the opportunity to attend and present their research findings at various conferences, underlining the program's commitment to academic excellence.
6Salary and Benefits
Fellows receive competitive salaries, with annual funding for academic projects, aiding in expenses related to conferences, books, and professional development. The fellowship also emphasizes resident wellness, offering resources to support both professional and personal growth during training.
7Application Process
The Infectious Disease Fellowship at Stony Brook participates in the National Residency Matching Program and requires applications exclusively through ERAS. Applicants must submit a personal statement outlining their career aspirations within infectious diseases, three letters of recommendation, a CV, USMLE transcripts, and a recent photograph. Interviews are extended by invitation only, ensuring a focused evaluation of candidates enthusiastically pursuing a career in this vital medical field.
2Visa Support and Competitiveness
The program actively supports international applicants through comprehensive visa assistance, typically sponsoring J-1 and H-1B visas. As the fellowship positions fill quickly due to high interest, the program is viewed as competitive; it welcomes qualified DO students and international medical graduates, maintaining an inclusive approach to eligible applicants.
1Special Application Requirements
