The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Stony Brook University is a comprehensive training program designed to prepare fellows for a successful career in critical care within the realm of internal medicine. This fellowship is integrated yet distinct from the Pulmonary Critical Care fellowship, providing unique educational experiences tailored to the needs of critical care specialists.

Clinical Training and Facilities

Stony Brook University Hospital serves as the main site for the fellowship's clinical training. As the only primary academic health facility in Suffolk County, it provides care to a diverse population of around 1.5 million residents across an area of 2,200 square miles. This diversity enriches the training experience, allowing fellows to engage with a wide variety of clinical cases and patient demographics.

The fellows in this program rotate through multiple Intensive Care Units (ICUs), including Medical, Surgical, Cardiac, Cardiothoracic, Neurological, and Emergency Medicine Critical Care units. This exposure equips them with essential skills in triage decision-making and patient stabilization during critical care consultative experiences.

Curriculum and Educational Opportunities

The fellowship has a dedicated curriculum specifically aimed at promoting an evidence-based understanding of Critical Care Medicine. It is designed to meet all procedural training requirements and lays the foundation for board certification in Critical Care Medicine. In addition to the hands-on training in critical care environments, fellows benefit from formal training in key aspects of ICU administration, team dynamics, and quality improvement methodologies.

Educational experiences are further enhanced through a robust complement of conferences and lectures. These include clinical case conferences, ultrasound rounds, simulation exercises, a journal club, research conferences, and a morbidity and mortality conference, all of which serve to deepen fellows' clinical knowledge and foster professional development.

Research plays a pivotal role in the fellowship, with numerous opportunities to engage in various critical care domains. Fellows are encouraged to participate in research initiatives focusing on critical care clinical outcomes, MICU outcomes, cardiac arrest, as well as critical care ultrasound and echocardiography. Visa Sponsorship and Application Requirements
