Dermatopathology Fellowship Overview

The University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a one-year Dermatopathology Fellowship designed for graduates of ACGME-accredited dermatology and pathology programs. This program provides intensive training that incorporates both clinical and laboratory aspects of dermatopathology.

Fellows in this program will have exposure to a significant volume of cases, signing around 6,000 accessions per year through the UMMC dermatopathology service. In addition, the fellowship includes a rotation at Dermatopathology Associates, a certified private lab in Jackson, MS, which processes over 18,000 accessions yearly. This diverse case exposure enables fellows to gain invaluable hands-on experience in diagnosing dermatological diseases.

Curriculum and Rotations

The fellowship curriculum is structured to provide comprehensive training in dermatopathology and includes distinct rotations based on the fellow's background. Those with clinical dermatology backgrounds will spend eight months in anatomic pathology with 50% of that time dedicated to respective areas of focus. Conversely, fellows with pathology backgrounds will rotate through dermatology clinic locations for eight months, whereby they will also share clinical responsibilities.

The program strategically involves practical learning experiences, including gross and microscopic evaluations, intraoperative consultations, and telepathology. Additional significant exposure is provided in subspecialty areas such as hematopathology, bone and soft tissue pathology, neuropathology, among others. These experiences are augmented by training in advanced techniques including histochemistry and immunohistochemistry.

Academic and Research Opportunities

Fellows in the dermatopathology program will be engaged academically through various formats including attendance at pathology conferences, surgical pathology didactic conferences, journal clubs, grand rounds, and autopsy conferences. These components are essential for fostering critical thinking and clinical reasoning in the diagnostics of dermatopathological diseases.

Moreover, fellows will have ample teaching opportunities, which are a valued part of the fellowship experience. They are expected to contribute photomicrographs and present cases during monthly grand rounds in dermatology, further enhancing their educational experience.
