The Dermatopathology Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center offers a one-year ACGME accredited program designed to provide an in-depth education and training experience in the fields of dermatology and pathology. This fellowship allows for an optional second year that emphasizes research and further clinical experience. There are two funded fellowship positions for each academic year. Applicants with training in either pathology or dermatology are considered equally, providing an inclusive environment that fosters diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Curriculum

The fellowship curriculum encompasses exposure to a wide range of cases including biopsies, large surgical excisions, lymphadenectomies, and numerous outside referral and consultation cases submitted for expert opinion. The program highlights various diagnostic challenges that primarily focus on oncologic cases, including but not limited to primary cutaneous carcinomas, melanoma, soft tissue tumors, lymphomas, and systemic diseases metastasizing to the skin. A substantial focus is placed on melanocytic lesions, which fellows will review prior to patient clinical appointments, ensuring they are well-prepared for varied diagnostic responsibilities.

Fellows participate actively in daily sign outs, consensus conferences, teaching conferences, and quality assurance/improvement meetings. They also engage in Grand Rounds and have opportunities for additional training in dermatology or anatomic pathology, including rotations in related subspecialties such as soft tissue and head & neck pathology in accordance with ACGME standards. The fellowship ensures comprehensive training in areas such as frozen section assessment of skin specimens, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, molecular pathology, Mohs specimen interpretation, and laboratory management.

Research Opportunities

Research is a pivotal aspect of the training program, encouraging fellows to engage in projects that contribute to their learning and enhance their educational resumes. At least one manuscript must be completed and submitted for publication as a requirement for graduation. Presentation opportunities at local, national, and international conferences are also available, fostering professional development.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for this fellowship, applicants must have completed training in pathology or dermatology through an ACGME-accredited residency program. Candidates are anticipated to be board-eligible in either anatomic pathology, clinical pathology or dermatology by the start of the fellowship program.
