Program Structure

The fellowship features two distinct focus tracks: the adult focus and the pediatric focus. The adult focus is primarily conducted at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, while the pediatric focus includes significant time spent at Texas Children’s Hospital in conjunction with adult rotations at Ben Taub Hospital. This unique structure allows fellows to tailor their training according to their future career aspirations in surgical critical care.

Curriculum

The curriculum within the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is designed to maximize clinical exposure and education. Fellows engage in all phases of surgical critical care while participating in didactic training sessions, which include online learning modules, simulation sessions, and critical care conferences. These sessions allow fellows to strengthen their theoretical knowledge, while clinical rotations provide hands-on experience in practice.

Fellows are required to participate in various conferences such as the Interdisciplinary Critical Care Conference and regular Grand Rounds. Research Opportunities

As part of the fellowship, each participant is encouraged to engage in clinical research or process improvement projects. Fellows are expected to initiate a research project early in their fellowship, with the goal of submitting an abstract to a scientific meeting and producing a manuscript. The Michael E. Application Process

To apply for the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, candidates must have completed an ACGME or AOA-approved residency in General Surgery and be in good standing. Applications must be submitted via the Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Fellowship Application Service (SAFAS). Applicants can apply for one or both fellowship tracks, with distinct rotations specified for the adult and pediatric focus.

International medical graduates are welcome to apply but must fulfill specific requirements, including obtaining an Institutional Permit and J-1 Visa support. The program is highly competitive, with an emphasis on selecting candidates who have strong clinical backgrounds.

Required application materials include a completed SAFAS application, three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, USMLE scores, and Board exam scores.
