1543543052The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is a distinguished two-year ACGME-accredited training program tailored for physicians aiming to enhance their clinical and interventional skills in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. The program offers extensive training in complex catheter ablation procedures, implantation, and management of various cardiac implantable electronic devices.
Fellows receive training in a variety of cardiac electrophysiologic and pacing procedures, which include:
- Complex catheter ablation for arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachyarrhythmias.
- Management of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization devices.
- Device and lead management, incorporating techniques such as laser lead extraction.
One of the unique features of the fellowship is its integration with the Clinical Cardiology Research Center. This provides fellows with exceptional research opportunities utilizing extensive databases from significant trials such as the MADIT series and RAID trial, among others 1.
Training Environment
The program trains three fellows annually, providing a comprehensive learning environment that permits flexibility for fellows to tailor their training to fit personal career goals and learning objectives 1.
Facilities include:
- Three state-of-the-art electrophysiology laboratories equipped with advanced technology, including 3D electroanatomic mapping systems and Stereotaxis remote magnetic navigation systems.
- A high volume of clinical procedures, with over 2000 intracardiac procedures and more than 600 catheter ablative procedures conducted yearly 1.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is designed to ensure comprehensive exposure to electrophysiology. Fellows will develop core competencies through:
- Observation and management of arrhythmia patients, including those presenting with palpitations, syncope, and bradyarrhythmias.
- Hands-on practice in invasive electrophysiology testing and techniques focused on therapeutic applications.
- Didactic sessions covering various aspects of electrophysiology, arrhythmia management, device therapy, and recent advancements in the field 3.
The fellowship also places a strong emphasis on research involvement, with fellows encouraged to participate in ongoing studies as well as initiate their own projects. This engagement not only enhances their educational experience but also contributes to the advancement of clinical practices in electrophysiology 5.
Application and Competitiveness
The program maintains a selective intake process, accepting only two fellows each year. Applicants must have completed or currently be enrolled in a three-year ACGME-accredited general cardiology program. The selection process is competitive; thus, candidates from diverse backgrounds, including DOs and International Medical Graduates (IMGs), may have a good chance if they meet the application required qualifications 5.
Visa Support
The University of Rochester provides visa support to eligible international medical graduates. The fellowship program can sponsor visas such as J-1 and H-1B, facilitating the participation of qualified candidates from international backgrounds who wish to enroll in the program.
