The University of Rochester Traditional Thoracic Surgery Fellowship is a fully accredited ACGME two-year program dedicated to developing capable, autonomous thoracic surgeons with a focus on leadership within the field. This independent fellowship offers a comprehensive training experience based entirely at Strong Memorial Hospital. The program is designed to facilitate robust clinical experience in thoracic and cardiac surgery, with an emphasis on both pediatric and adult patients. This fellowship follows both the 5+2 and 4+3 training tracks and involves a significant number of clinical cases and educational rotations necessary for a complete surgical education.

With an annual offering of approximately 2,500 index cases, fellows gain the operative proficiency required by the American Board of Thoracic Surgeons for certification, ensuring they are well-prepared for future practice. The curriculum encompasses various specialties including thoracic/foregut surgery, adult cardiac surgery, and pediatric cardiac surgery. Salary and Benefits

Fellows receive a competitive stipend based on their postgraduate year (PGY), with significant annual increments as they progress through the program. For the 2024-2025 academic year, the stipends range from $68,417 for PGY-1 to $94,241 for PGY-8. In terms of visa support, the program accepts international medical graduates (IMGs) and sponsors J-1 visas for successful applicants, thereby facilitating opportunities for fellows from diverse backgrounds to join the program and further their training.

Application Requirements

Applicants must meet specific requirements to be considered for participation in the fellowship. Admission relies on the standardized application process, requiring submission through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). Candidates must also provide a narrative personal statement, three letters of reference from faculty members, and a Dean’s letter. Importantly, one recommendation letter must come from the chief of surgery or the cardiothoracic surgery program director.

Applications are invited yearly for one position, to be filled every other year, making the program highly competitive. The selection process evaluates candidates holistically, with particular attention to academic qualifications, letters of recommendation, and interview performance.
