Urology Residency Program Overview

The Urology Residency Program at McGovern Medical School is committed to developing highly skilled urologists by integrating clinical training, basic and clinical research, and exposure to advanced healthcare practices. The residency comprises five years of comprehensive training, emphasizing diverse clinical experiences and expert mentorship. Residents receive training at renowned facilities, including Memorial Hermann Hospital, Lyndon Baines Johnson General Hospital (LBJ), and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, which is highly regarded as the number one cancer center in the nation.

Curriculum and Rotations

The residency curriculum is strategically designed, combining rigorous academic training with hands-on clinical exposure across various settings. The program includes specified rotations across surgical disciplines, enabling residents to develop foundational skills before advancing to specialized urological training.

PGY-1: First-year residents mainly focus on acquiring critical patient care skills and mastering basic surgical techniques. This includes rotations in general surgery and exposure to several surgical specialties, building a strong foundation for future urology training.

PGY-2 and PGY-3: Junior residents transition into more specialized urological duties, gaining clinical knowledge and collaborating closely with faculty. This phase includes learning to conduct outpatient evaluations, surgical procedures, and patient management, preparing residents for more advanced surgical responsibilities.

PGY-4: Senior residents undertake advanced surgical rotations, including Pediatric Urology and complex surgical procedures. They begin to take on leadership roles within the team, guiding junior residents and managing clinical responsibilities independently.

PGY-5: Chief residents function at the highest level, coordinating care, supervising junior residents, and engaging in advanced surgical cases. By the end of their training, they are expected to demonstrate exemplary clinical decision-making and mastery of urological techniques.
