The General Surgery Residency Program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston is dedicated to training residents to become safe, qualified, board-certified surgeons. The program prepares residents to be future teachers and leaders in surgery, with over 80% of graduates continuing their training in fellowship programs and nearly half becoming surgical academicians associated with university departments of surgery. The program boasts a diverse group of faculty from various practice backgrounds, offering residents a well-rounded training experience. Residents benefit from a wide variety of training opportunities in general surgery and surgical specialties.

Research opportunities are abundant throughout the program, with residents able to pursue various research options, including basic science, translational, outcomes, and health services research. Residents are financially supported to present at regional and national conferences and encouraged to publish their work in high-impact journals.

Residents at McGovern Medical School rotate through several hospitals, including Memorial Hermann - TMC, which houses Houston's primary Level-1 Trauma Center, The Red Duke Trauma Institute. They also rotate at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital, a robust county hospital, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where they gain experience in surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, and pediatric surgery.

The program is highly competitive, receiving 1600+ residency applications each year. The average USMLE Step scores for the current intern class are Step 1: 246 and Step 2: 259. Additionally, the chief residents typically graduate with over 1200 operative cases. Residents are expected to obtain various certifications before completing their training.

The program follows a structured education and curriculum plan, including various teaching exercises like service rounds, surgical technique workshops, research seminars, journal clubs, and more. Clinical rotations are spread across different hospitals to expose residents to a diverse patient population.

McGovern Medical School supports J-1 visa sponsorship for international medical graduates and requires them to have a valid ECFMG certificate before the program start date. Residents interested in the program must meet the minimum requirements for General Surgery Residency as outlined by the ACGME and submit applications through ERAS.
