The 5-year program provides hands-on experience, education, and training in all aspects of General Surgery. The program has a strong educational background, maintaining a 100% pass rate on the written board exam for over 10 years. Residents have the opportunity to work at a Level I Trauma Center, engage in Solid Organ Transplant programs, Hepatobiliary procedures, and a large number of Minimally Invasive and Robotic surgeries.

The residency program offers three categorical positions per year and three first-year preliminary positions. The exposure to a wide range of surgical diseases and the chance to work closely with experienced general and specialist surgeons help residents become well-trained in all aspects of general surgery. Graduates of the program have successfully entered into general surgery practice or pursued fellowship training in specialties such as Vascular Surgery, MIS/Bariatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care.

The program leadership includes Dr. Aaron Hoffman as the Associate Program Director, Dr. Michelle M. Olson as the Interim Program Director, Dr. Susannah Hambright as the Associate Program Director, and Kathy Flesher as the Program Coordinator.

The application requirements typically include being within a recent year of graduation, with USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 passed on the first attempt. The program participates in the NRMP and utilizes ERAS for applications.

Residents in the program have access to a skills lab to practice basic and advanced surgical techniques. Additionally, there is a focus on research with resources provided by the Clinical Research Institute to engage in clinical research activities.

The program also offers weekly conferences covering topics such as Morbidity & Mortality, Interesting Case Conference, and Journal Club. Residents have opportunities to present their findings at conferences with financial support from the program.

Overall, the Methodist Health System Dallas General Surgery Residency Program provides a comprehensive and enriching training experience for aspiring surgeons.
