Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center Program

The Surgery Program at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center is designed as a robust, five-year residency that is fully accredited and projected to commence its first cohort of residents on July 1, 2024. This program is uniquely positioned to accept three categorical PGY 1 interns annually, with the inaugural class set to graduate in 2029. Lafayette, known as the 'Hub City' of Louisiana, is enriched with a vibrant Cajun culture, numerous festivals such as the Festival International de Louisiana, and serves as a significant economic center in the state.

Curriculum and Rotations

The residency offers comprehensive clinical training primarily at the Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center, which will account for approximately 90% of the resident's experience. This integrated healthcare system provides routine and specialty care, including a robust Level 2 Trauma Service. Throughout the residency, trainees will acquire extensive knowledge in general surgery, encompassing specialties such as endocrinology, plastic surgery, and endoscopy. The program is designed to hone superior surgical skills through exposure to a vast array of pathologies.

Additionally, residents will rotate through the Ochsner Clinic Foundation's main campus in New Orleans during their fourth year, which is nationally recognized for its excellence in solid organ transplants—specifically noted as the leading liver transplant center. This four-year experience provides a formal solid organ transplant rotation along with vital operative and critical care management training.
