Louisiana State University School of Medicine (Baton Rouge) Program

The LSU Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program in Baton Rouge focuses on training physician leaders to become compassionate, respectful, and competent obstetricians and gynecologists. The program aims to have residents graduate mastering the core competencies outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which include patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice.

The program offers four positions at each level, and residents stay in Baton Rouge for the four years of instruction. During the first year, residents gain extensive clinical experience through rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, radiology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, and NICU. In subsequent years, residents focus on obstetrics, gain greater responsibilities, and receive advanced training in subspecialties like maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, and minimally invasive surgery.

The primary training site is Woman's Hospital, Louisiana’s largest birthing facility, with over 8,000 deliveries per year. The program emphasizes providing residents with a solid foundation of clinical knowledge and experience to enhance their performance and professional growth. Structured protected time is allocated for didactics, including various conferences, lectures, and simulation labs, allowing residents to develop as effective clinicians, surgeons, teachers, and leaders. Regularly scheduled hospital-based conferences and CME opportunities further supplement the educational experience.
