Surgery - Jackson, MS | ACGME Code: 4402721165 | NRMP Code: 1957440P0, 1957440C0
The University of Mississippi Medical Center General Surgery Residency program offers a comprehensive five-year training experience fully accredited by the ACGME's Surgery Residency Review Committee. The program emphasizes excellence in surgical education with a focus on providing a varied and extensive clinical experience for its residents.
Residents in the program benefit from a range of surgical specialties, including plastic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, urology, and surgical critical care. With no fellowship programs in fields such as surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, and transplant surgery, residents have the opportunity to gain significant expertise in these subspecialties.
The program prepares residents for successful independent practice as safe, competent, and confident surgeons. Residents have access to a high volume of complex cases at UMMC and Children's of Mississippi, the state's only tertiary referral center, Level 1 Trauma Center, dedicated children's hospital, and transplant center. Rotations at the VA Medical Center and community hospitals further enrich the training experience.
While formal research time is not mandatory, residents interested in research have opportunities to engage in projects at the Cardiovascular-Renal Research Center, with funding support available. The program ensures that all residents complete at least one research project during their residency and supports their attendance at national meetings.
The General Surgery Residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is committed to resident education, fostering a collegial relationship between faculty and residents. The supportive environment aims to help residents achieve their personal career goals, whether in successful private practice or research-focused academic roles.
For application, the program requires a recent photograph, official transcript, USMLE Step 1 results (minimum score of 220), dean's letter, and three letters of recommendation, including two from surgeons. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) need one year of U.S. clinical experience for consideration. Six categorical and five preliminary candidates are selected annually.
