Overview

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center offers a fully accredited four-year residency training program that prepares residents to become skilled anesthesiologists. The program is characterized by a competency-based curriculum which includes systematic progression of key learning goals and milestones, ensuring comprehensive training for all residents. The program has the capacity to train 40 residents, cultivating proficient and knowledgeable professionals capable of serving as experts in anesthesia and perioperative medicine.

Curriculum Structure

The first year, or the Clinical Base Year (CBY/PGY1), focuses on broad training in essential clinical foundations. Interns will engage in various rotations including, but not limited to:

  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Pulmonology
  • Pediatrics
  • Neurology
  • Obstetric-Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Surgical Wards
  • Adult Emergency Medicine
  • Cardiology
  • Acute Pain Service

This foundational year culminates in an intensive one-month anesthesiology rotation designed to deliver simulation training, alongside a thorough orientation to the operative environment.

The subsequent three years (PGY2-PGY4) are dedicated to clinical anesthesia training which emphasizes the practice of anesthesiology. During these years, residents will rotate through various subspecialties of anesthesia, with the third year (CA3 year, PGY4) allowing for individual interests to be pursued further, whether in general anesthesia practice or specific subspecialty areas.

Throughout these training years, the program encompasses a robust didactic curriculum featuring:

  • Weekly departmental grand rounds
  • Basic and advanced resident lectures
  • Morbidity and Mortality conferences
  • Journal clubs
  • Problem-based learning discussions
  • ABA oral exam preparation

Resident Involvement

Residents are encouraged to enhance their teaching skills by delivering departmental grand rounds presentations, supervising simulation training for peers, and engaging in formal lectures and clinical teaching. This involvement helps cultivate leadership and communication skills essential for anesthesiology practice.
