Overview

The Baptist Memorial Medical Education General Surgery Residency program is dedicated to training well-qualified general surgeons to address the rising demand for surgical care in the Mid-South region. The program emphasizes comprehensive surgical training, aiming to prepare residents for successful practices in urban, community, and rural environments. Clinical experiences are provided in advanced tertiary referral hospitals, large community-based institutions, and small-town clinical practices to enrich the residents' exposure to various surgical settings and techniques.

The faculty members of the program are experienced in resident education, surgical research, and hospital leadership. Many have held or currently hold academic appointments at universities, enhancing the educational environment with their extensive knowledge and leadership in various surgical specialties. The program collaborates with a group of dedicated community surgeons who are equally committed to shaping the next generation of surgical professionals.

Curriculum and Training

The curriculum is structured to meet or exceed ACGME and American Board of Surgery requirements, ensuring that residents are well-prepared to handle the surgical needs of diverse patient populations. Training includes a substantial amount of hands-on surgical practice supported by a state-of-the-art surgical simulation lab that features high-fidelity equipment for procedure simulation, laparoscopy, and robotic surgery training. This lab is intended to maximize the educational experience, allowing residents to develop the technical skills necessary for high-quality surgical care.

Clinical Rotations

Residents rotate through multiple sites, comprising:

  • Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis: The flagship hospital serves as a 706-bed facility specializing in multiple surgical disciplines, acting as the regional referral center for various complex surgeries.
  • Baptist Women’s Hospital: A specialized facility providing comprehensive women’s healthcare and pediatric care, facilitating dedicated rotations in pediatric and breast surgery.
  • Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto: A community hospital where residents focus on general surgery and related fields, emphasizing the community care aspect.
  • Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County: Offers unique insights into rural surgical practices, allowing residents to appreciate the vital role of surgical care in smaller communities.

Residents also spend time at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, gaining experience in trauma and transplant surgery.

Research Opportunities

Research is highly encouraged within the program, as it fosters lifelong learning for the residents. This includes opportunities to engage in clinical trials, retrospective chart reviews, and collaborations with the Baptist Clinical Research Institute. Each resident is paired with a research mentor at the start of training, promoting engagement in design and execution of research relevant to their interests. Regular journal clubs are held to discuss recent advancements in surgical literature, allowing residents to critically analyze and interpret scholarly articles.

Didactics and Conferences

Didactic sessions are held regularly, including morbidity and mortality conferences, clinical sciences conferences, and surgical grand rounds. The curriculum aims to integrate core surgical competencies into these educational venues, supporting residents' understanding of both practical and theoretical aspects of surgery.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program supports J-1 visa sponsorship but does not accept H-1B visa holders. The application process is competitive; applicants must have graduated from an LCME- or AOA-accredited medical school, and meet other specific professional and screening requirements.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit their applications through ERAS by the end of October, including a CV, medical school transcripts, USMLE or COMLEX scores, and letters of recommendation. A minimum score of 240 on Step 2 of the USMLE is preferred, and any clinical gap years must be limited to one. The program also evaluates compliance with pre-employment requirements, including drug screening and vaccinations against COVID-19.
