Overview of the Program

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology based in Memphis offers a robust residency training aimed at enhancing women's health care in the Mid-South. With advancements introduced following the leadership of the current Program Director, the program is continually evolving to provide comprehensive educational experiences. Residents are trained to become proficient in evidence-based medicine, clinical and surgical skills, and compassionate care for diverse populations, especially the underprivileged.

Members of the faculty and resident group are committed to academic excellence and research initiatives, being supported by a dedicated research team and a recently appointed Research Director. Increased faculty numbers supplement the training while elevating educational experiences.

Curriculum

The residency curriculum is structured to develop clinical skills while fostering academic pursuits. The longitudinal approach ensures continuity of care throughout the four-year program. Residents gain exposure to high-risk obstetrics and gynecology, alongside elective opportunities aimed at diversifying clinical experiences.

Residents engage in rotations across various subspecialties, including Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Urogynecology, and Reproductive Endocrinology. The structure requires residents to maintain their practice within the Continuity of Care Clinics beginning in the first year, solidifying their clinical practice and patient relationships.

Clinical Rotations

Residents participate in rotations at multiple clinical sites including:

• Regional One Health: Recognized as a High-Risk Obstetrics Center of Excellence providing cutting-edge obstetric and gynecology services.
• Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women: Offers focused training in obstetrics and gynecologic care through an independent women’s health facility.
• Memphis VA Medical Center: Serves veterans with a variety of health care needs, integrating both surgical and obstetric training.

Unique Educational Opportunities

The program emphasizes hands-on training in minimally invasive procedures and robotics. Weekly small-group interactive sessions led by faculty enhance learning through collaborative discussions, enabling residents to critically engage with clinical cases.

Research Participation

Research is a crucial part of the residency experience, with each resident required to complete a project by the end of their PGY3 year. The program allocates research blocks that provide structured support. Financial assistance is available via departmental funds for both research activities and participation in conferences where findings may be presented.

Visa Sponsorship

The program only supports J1 visas for international medical graduates (IMGs). Applicants requiring H1B or other visa types should not apply. This, coupled with specific eligibility criteria regarding examination scores, creates a highly competitive environment.

Application Requirements

Applications are accepted through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP), requiring strong academic credentials, including:

• USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 passed on the first attempt, preferably with scores above 230.
• COMLEX Level 1 and Level 2 passed on the first attempt, with scores aiming for 560 or better.
• Three letters of recommendation, including one from the OBGYN chair.

Interviews are by invitation only based on a thorough review of applications. The competition for residency positions is high, and thus a solid application is essential for consideration.

Salary and Benefits

Residents receive a competitive salary alongside comprehensive benefits including health insurance, lab coats, and access to library resources. Leave policies are accommodating, permitting up to three weeks for annual leave and sick leave, as well as educational leave if approved by the Program Director.
