University of Tennessee Program

The UT Health Science Center Child Neurology Residency program is primarily located at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, along with rotations at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Memphis Newborn Center at Regional One Health. Additionally, adult neurology rotations are conducted at Methodist University Hospital, Regional One Health, and the Memphis VA Medical Center. The program is structured carefully to ensure that residents gain comprehensive exposure to a variety of pediatric neurologic diseases, including epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, neuro-oncology, headaches, spasticity, developmental disorders, autism, metabolic and storage disorders, and muscular dystrophy, among others.1

The residency is designed as a 5-year categorical program, consisting of 2 years in pediatrics followed by 3 years dedicated to child neurology. Only a single application is necessary for admission to the program. This framework allows residents to hone their skills specifically in pediatric neurology while benefiting from the foundational training provided in pediatrics.1

Curriculum

The curriculum for the residency is structured with an emphasis on diverse clinical experiences. Early in the first year, residents partake in pediatric rotations and begin their engagement with various subspecialties within neurology. The program follows a longitudinal approach to clinical experiences, seamlessly integrating various aspects of neurological care across different settings.4

Rotations

Each resident's training includes substantial time spent on adult neurology rotations, allocated throughout the three years of pediatric neurology residency. This entails six months during the first year, complemented by three months each in the second and third years. In addition to adult rotations, pediatric neurology residents engage in rotations across numerous subspecialties, such as neuroradiology, neuro-ophthalmology, electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), neurosurgery, and neuro-oncology, ensuring a well-rounded education and preparation for board examinations.8

Competitiveness and Application Requirements

The residency program is deemed highly competitive, with specific application prerequisites. Candidates are required to submit USMLE scores as part of their application process, along with three letters of reference and a Dean's letter. While there might be variances in terms of acceptance of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and DOs, the program encourages a diverse applicant pool and is considered friendly towards IMGs. It is also necessary to adhere to any maximum limitations regarding failed STEP exams as part of applicant screening.9
