The University of Kentucky College of Medicine (Bowling Green) General Surgery Residency Program at The Medical Center provides a comprehensive five-year training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. This program accepts two residents annually to develop skilled and compassionate surgeons. The curriculum includes a variety of clinical experiences, early operating opportunities, outpatient clinics, and consult services for all departments.
Residents undergo a structured program with graduated responsibilities and diverse rotations across specialties such as General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Plastics and Burn, Cardiothoracic/SICU, and more. They also engage in academic activities like M&M conferences, didactics, ABSITE reviews, protected research time, and journal club sessions.
Applicants must be graduates of LCME or COCA accredited medical schools and should have passed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or COMLEX equivalent prior to interview consideration. Preferred qualifications include USMLE scores of 230 and above on each step or COMLEX scores of 550 and above on each step, with no history of exam failures. The program participates in ERAS for applications and NRMP for the matching process.
International medical graduates must hold a current, valid ECFMG certificate and meet specific criteria for application. The program does not support H-1 visas but welcomes Green Card holders or those eligible for J-1 visa sponsorship. Applications from candidates who graduated from medical school more than 24 months prior to PGY-1 start date are generally not considered.
Interviews are conducted between November and February, with selected applicants contacted via email. The interview process includes meetings with the program director, coordinator, core faculty, and current residents to offer insight into the program's structure and culture.
