University of Kentucky College of Medicine (Bowling Green) Program

The University of Kentucky (Bowling Green) Internal Medicine Residency Program located at The Medical Center in Bowling Green is designed to develop physicians interested in Internal Medicine, equipping them with a solid knowledge base and clinical skills necessary in fields such as Hospital Medicine or Primary Care. The program spans thirty-six (36) months and admits seven (7) residents each year, culminating in a total of twenty-one (21) residents trained at any given time.

This residency program offers a robust curriculum that prepares residents for board certification in Internal Medicine. The courses cover a broad spectrum of medical knowledge tailored to meet the diverse needs of patients in varying geographic regions. The program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and follows the Program ID # 1402000144.

Each resident is expected to undergo significant hands-on training under the supervision of core faculty members and experienced clinicians. During the residency, the residents will partake in a structured curriculum that includes different rotations designed to build clinical competence across a range of internal medicine topics.

Program Curriculum

The curriculum is divided over three years as follows:

Post-Graduate Year 1

• 5 months of General Internal Medicine
• 1 month of Cardiology
• 1 month of Emergency Medicine
• 1 month of Endocrinology
• 1 month of Critical Care
• 1 month of Pulmonology
• 2 months of Electives

All residents will also attend a half-day continuity clinic each week, ensuring ongoing patient interaction throughout their training.

Post-Graduate Years 2 and 3

• 7 months of General Internal Medicine
• 1 month of Cardiology
• 1 month in Gastroenterology
• 1 month in Hematology/Oncology
• 1 month in Infectious Disease
• 1 month in Nephrology
• 1 month in Rheumatology
• 1 month in Neurology
• 1 month in Geriatric Medicine
• 1/2 month in Palliative Care
• 1/2 month in Addiction Medicine
• 2 months in Critical Care
• 3 months of Night Float
• 3 months of Electives

Residents are required to choose electives from a range of available options including various Internal Medicine Subspecialties and non-medical surgical specialties.

Application Requirements

The program invites applications from graduates of medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or international medical schools recognized by the World Health Organization. Notably, no applicants can be considered if they graduated more than twenty-four (24) months before the anticipated start date, unless they have been continuously in training or active practice.

Applicants must have successfully completed USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or the equivalent COMLEX exams prior to being considered for interviews. The preferred qualifications include USMLE scores of 215 or higher on each step without any failures. Additionally, the residency program uses the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for processing applications, along with participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Competitive Nature of the Program

This residency program is highly competitive, with an emphasis on academic performance, communication skills, preparedness, and personal qualities. The program is open to international medical graduates (IMGs), provided they meet specific requirements including having a valid ECFMG certification. Note that the program sponsors J-1 visas for qualified applicants but does not support H-1B visas.

Interview Process

Invitations for interviews are extended via email or ERAS scheduler, typically scheduled between October and December. The interview day includes meetings with program leadership and current residents, providing an insight into both the educational and social environment of the program. The format of interviews may conform to guidelines from professional organizations, potentially allowing for virtual interviews depending on the circumstances.

Visa Support

The University of Kentucky (Bowling Green) Internal Medicine Residency Program accepts applications only from international medical graduates who hold a Green Card or are eligible for a J-1 visa, which it can sponsor. There is a clear stipulation that H-1B visa support is not available.
